What does error code B006164 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B006164 is a specific diagnostic message indicating a serious internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit (SRS). This fault occurs primarily in Jaguar models and signals that the central control unit of the safety system has become inoperable due to defective electronic components on the circuit board.
Technically, this means the control unit has failed an internal self-test. The root cause usually lies directly on the device’s printed circuit board. Components often affected include capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), or the flash memory, which are responsible for processing sensor data and triggering the airbags.
The airbag control unit is the brain of the entire occupant protection system. It continuously receives data from impact and acceleration sensors, evaluates it in real time, and decides, in the event of a crash, which airbags and seatbelt pretensioners should be deployed. An internal fault such as B006164 disables the entire system to prevent false activations, but also deactivates the protective functions in an actual emergency.
How can you recognize error code B006164?
The most obvious symptom of error code B006164 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster. This warning does not disappear even after restarting the vehicle, signaling a persistent, safety-critical defect in the system. In this state, the airbags are completely deactivated.
Another clear indication is disrupted or completely impossible communication with the airbag control unit via a diagnostic tool. Workshops often cannot establish a connection to the module to read out the fault memory in detail, pointing to a deep-seated electronic defect within the control unit itself.
Even if the error code can be read out, it cannot be permanently cleared. Error code B006164 reappears immediately because the underlying hardware issue persists. A simple reset is ineffective and does not resolve the problem.
What causes B006164?
The primary cause of error code B006164 is physical damage to electronic components on the main circuit board of the airbag control unit. Often, aging capacitors, faulty ICs, or memory errors in the flash memory are to blame. Moisture damage leading to corrosion and short circuits is also a common source of failure.
Defective components are the most frequent cause. Electronic parts such as resistors, capacitors, processors, or memory chips have a limited lifespan. Thermal stress and aging can lead to component failure, triggering an internal error in the control unit’s system log.
Moisture and corrosion pose another significant risk. Water ingress—often through a leaky area in the vehicle—can reach the circuit board, causing short circuits between delicate traces and corroding solder joints and components, inevitably resulting in total device failure.
Stored crash data following an accident can also lock up the control unit. Although this is not technically a defect, the unit is rendered inoperable and frequently reports an internal error since it is designed for single-use activation. Such data must be professionally erased to restore functionality.
