What does error code B0072 1B mean?
The error code B0072 1B indicates a specific electrical fault in the control circuit of the passenger-side seatbelt pretensioner. The airbag control unit has detected an implausible resistance value, a short circuit, or an open circuit in the wiring to the seatbelt pretensioner, which prevents it from functioning correctly in the event of a crash.
Technically, this fault is referred to as “Passenger Seatbelt Pretensioner Control Module Fault.” It signifies that communication or electrical actuation of the pyrotechnic device in the passenger-side seatbelt pretensioner is malfunctioning. The system classifies this as a safety-critical fault and deactivates the affected component.
Electronically, the control unit continuously monitors the ignition circuit of the seatbelt pretensioner. If measured voltage or resistance values deviate from the target values stored in the system, error code B0072 1B is logged, and the airbag warning light illuminates.
How do you recognize error code B0072 1B?
The most obvious symptom is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS lamp) on the instrument cluster. Additionally, a warning message such as “Airbag/Seatbelt Pretensioner Fault” may appear on the vehicle’s display. This error cannot be cleared permanently with a diagnostic tool because there is a persistent hardware or wiring defect.
The airbag warning light remains on after starting the vehicle and does not extinguish as usual. This is a clear indication that the airbag system has identified one or more components as faulty and is no longer fully functional.
In many cases, error code B0072 1B is stored in the airbag control unit’s fault memory and can be read out during diagnostics. Attempts to clear the fault memory either fail or the error reappears immediately, confirming that this is not a sporadic issue but a permanent malfunction.
What causes B0072 1B?
The primary cause of error code B0072 1B is typically problems in the wiring harness between the airbag control unit and the seatbelt pretensioner, such as broken wires or corroded connectors. An internal defect within the seatbelt pretensioner itself, or a hardware failure in the airbag control unit’s drive electronics, can also be responsible.
Connector issues under the passenger seat are very common. Seat adjustments or moisture can damage cables or cause contacts to corrode, leading to an open circuit or short circuit.
The seatbelt pretensioner itself may also fail. A defect in the pyrotechnic igniter or internal electronics can result in resistance values falling outside acceptable tolerances.
In rarer cases, the root cause lies directly in the airbag control unit. A defective output stage on the circuit board responsible for driving the passenger-side seatbelt pretensioner can trigger this specific error code.

Error code B0072 1B occurs in specific vehicle models whose airbag system architecture employs this type of monitoring for the seatbelt pretensioner circuit. Notable examples include the Jaguar XKR-S from the X150 series and the Citroën ë-C4X III.
