What does error code B01101 mean?
Error code B01101 indicates an internal electronic fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). Typically, this points to a serious hardware defect on the circuit board, such as faulty components (capacitors, ICs), a short circuit, or an open circuit. As a result, the control unit can no longer reliably perform its safety‑critical functions.
The airbag control unit is the central control module for the entire occupant protection system. It processes data from crash sensors and decides within milliseconds whether to deploy airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. An internal fault like B01101 compromises this vital function.
From a technical standpoint, the fault can arise from numerous causes directly on the circuit board. These include defective microcontrollers, damaged memory chips (ICs), or aging capacitors that can no longer maintain proper voltage levels. Even minute hairline cracks in the conductive traces can lead to open circuits.
External factors may also trigger the issue, such as moisture ingress causing corrosion, or mechanical stress following a collision. Problems with the power supply or a faulty ground connection can likewise damage the sensitive electronics inside the unit over time.
How do you recognize error B01101?
The main symptom of error B01101 is a continuously illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Another clear indication is that the error code cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools, suggesting a permanent hardware‑related fault.
The airbag warning light is the vehicle’s primary signal alerting the driver to a malfunction in the safety system. This warning should never be ignored, as the protective function of the airbags would no longer be guaranteed in the event of a crash.
If a workshop attempts to erase the fault memory, error code B01101 either reappears immediately or cannot be cleared at all. This behavior is typical of internal control unit faults, as the unit’s self‑diagnostic system detects the defect again with every system startup.
As a consequence of this fault, the vehicle often deactivates the entire airbag system for safety reasons. This means that in the event of a collision, neither airbags nor seatbelt pretensioners would deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
What causes B01101?
The primary cause of B01101 is an internal hardware defect. Most commonly, it involves aged or overloaded electronic components on the circuit board—such as microprocessors or capacitors—that have failed. Damage caused by moisture, corrosion, or mechanical shocks is also a frequent trigger for this specific error code.
Often, the fault lies in the complex microelectronics. A defective microcontroller or a faulty memory chip (IC) can prevent the internal software from functioning correctly, which the system interprets as internal error B01101.
Physical damage to the circuit board itself—such as that resulting from a collision—can also lead to short circuits or open circuits. Even without visible damage to the housing, the impact of a crash may be enough to break solder joints or damage components.
In rarer cases, a firmware issue within the control unit may also be involved. However, this is usually a secondary effect of a hardware problem, where data stored in memory becomes corrupted, rather than a standalone software fault.
Which vehicles are affected by B01101?
Error code B01101 occurs frequently in vehicles from the VAG Group, particularly models like the Škoda Octavia GreenLine Mk2. Other VW, Audi, and Seat models may also be affected, as well as vehicles from other manufacturers that use control units supplied by vendors such as Bosch or Continental.
A specific model in which this error code is diagnosed more often is the second‑generation Škoda Octavia GreenLine (Mk2). The control units installed in this series show a particular susceptibility to this internal electronic fault.

Before removing the control unit, read out the fault memory to document error code B01101. During removal, for safety reasons, disconnect the vehicle’s power supply.
Upon receipt at Airbag24, our technicians will open the control unit. This is followed by a visual and electronic inspection of the circuit board under a microscope to identify defective components such as capacitors, ICs, or damaged solder joints.
The identified faulty components are carefully desoldered and replaced with new, high-quality spare parts. Subsequently, any crash data stored in the memory and error code B01101 are permanently erased from the control unit’s memory.
Finally, the repaired control unit is tested on a specialized test bench to verify full functionality. Only after a successful test is it approved for return shipment. We provide a 12-month warranty on every repair.
