What does error code B0131 mean?

Error code B0131 indicates an open circuit in the ignition circuit of the right seat belt pretensioner, known as the ‘Open Right Seat Belt Pretensioner Squib Circuit’. The airbag control unit has detected an electrical interruption in the ignition circuit of the pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioner on the vehicle’s right side, thereby reporting a critical malfunction.

Technically speaking, this means that the electrical connection between the airbag control unit and the igniter (squib) of the right seat belt pretensioner is no longer intact. This igniter is responsible for activating a small explosive charge in the event of a crash, which rapidly tightens the seat belt to provide optimal occupant protection.

An interruption in this circuit—whether caused by a broken wire or a defective igniter—prevents the control unit from activating the seat belt pretensioner. For safety reasons, the system is deactivated, and error code B0131 is permanently stored in the airbag module’s fault memory.

How can you recognize error code B0131?

The main symptom of error code B0131 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This indicates a serious fault that compromises occupant safety and requires immediate inspection. Other driving functions are usually unaffected.

The airbag warning light does not turn off after starting the vehicle, as the control unit re-identifies the fault during each self-test. This is a clear indication that at least one component of the restraint system is not functioning properly.

Another potential cause is the seat belt pretensioner (squib) itself. If the internal resistance of the igniter falls outside acceptable tolerances, the control unit interprets this as an open circuit.

In rarer cases, the root cause lies directly within the airbag control unit. An internal hardware defect, moisture ingress, or secondary damage resulting from overvoltage or a previous airbag deployment (stored crash data) can also trigger error code B0131.
