What does error code B0136 mean?

Error code B0136 indicates an open circuit in the ignition circuit of the airbag or seatbelt pretensioner on the vehicle’s left side. The airbag control unit can no longer electrically monitor this component or deploy it in an emergency. As a result, the entire safety system is deactivated, and the airbag warning light remains steadily illuminated.

Technically speaking, “open circuit” means that the electrical connection has been interrupted. The control unit continuously sends test signals to check the resistance of the igniter. If no closed circuit is detected, the system interprets this as a serious fault and registers code B0136.

The consequence is immediate deactivation of the affected system. Consequently, the vehicle can no longer provide full occupant protection, which constitutes a significant defect during a mandatory technical inspection.

How do you recognize error B0136?

The primary symptom of error B0136 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light in the instrument cluster. The error code is stored in the SRS control unit’s memory and cannot be cleared until the underlying cause of the circuit interruption is resolved. The airbag system is completely inoperative.

Immediately after starting the vehicle, the system performs a self-test. If it detects an open circuit, the warning light activates and stays on continuously to alert the driver to the malfunction.

In some cases, the fault may appear following a collision. Even if external components have been replaced, the error persists if crash data has also been saved in the control unit.

What causes B0136?

The most common cause of B0136 is physical damage to the peripheral components of the control unit. This includes broken cables, corroded or loose connectors leading to the airbag or seatbelt pretensioner. Less frequently, the airbag igniter or the seatbelt pretensioner itself may be defective. An internal fault within the airbag control unit is also a possible cause.

A visual inspection of the wiring—especially around seats, doors, or the steering column—is often the first diagnostic step. Cable breaks caused by mechanical stress are not uncommon.

Additionally, the airbag igniter (squib) or the pyrotechnic seatbelt pretensioner may internally develop a defect that results in an open circuit, triggering error B0136 as detected by the control unit.

Finally, the airbag control unit itself may suffer damage due to aging, moisture, or voltage surges, affecting the internal circuit board or the driver circuits for the ignition circuits.

Which vehicles are affected by B0136?

While error code B0136 occurs across various manufacturers, it is particularly well-documented in certain models from Citroën and Toyota.
