What does error code B0160 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B0160 is a standardized diagnostic trouble code (DTC) from the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), indicating a specific internal fault within the airbag control unit. This code signals that the module has detected a malfunction in its own circuits or data-processing routines, making professional electronic repair essential.
The B0160 code belongs to the Body Codes (B-Codes) group and identifies issues in the vehicle’s comfort and safety systems—in this case, the airbag system. The airbag control unit is the central control module that continuously monitors data from crash sensors and, in the event of an accident, deploys restraint systems such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners.
If this error occurs, the proper functioning of the entire safety system can no longer be guaranteed. The control unit switches to a safety mode to prevent unintended deployment, but this also means that deployment will fail in an actual emergency.
How do you recognize error B0160?
The most obvious symptom of error code B0160 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. The warning lamp—usually a stylized airbag symbol or the “SRS” label—does not turn off after starting the vehicle. This is a clear indication of an active, safety‑critical fault in the system.
Typically, the light remains steadily on without flashing, signaling a persistent, non‑transient error. The vehicle thus alerts the driver that the restraint system is disabled and requires inspection.
Other symptoms are usually not directly noticeable, as the fault affects passive safety. Only by reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool can error code B0160 be identified as the specific cause of the illuminated warning light.
What causes B0160?
The primary cause of error code B0160 is typically an internal defect within the airbag control unit itself. However, external factors such as corroded or faulty connectors, damaged wiring leading to the control unit, or defective sensors in the SRS—such as seat occupancy mats or crash sensors—can also trigger the error.
An internal hardware failure on the control unit’s circuit board is one of the most common causes. This may include cold solder joints, defective microprocessors, or failing memory chips.
Loose or corroded connectors at the control unit or sensors can generate erroneous signals that the control unit interprets as an internal fault. Similarly, broken or pinched cables in the vehicle’s wiring harness can disrupt communication.
Defective sensors—such as the seat occupancy mat or side crash sensors—may provide implausible readings that the control unit sometimes misinterprets as an internal system error.
In certain vehicle models, such as the Porsche 718, a faulty clock spring in the steering wheel or improperly reset crash data following an accident can also lead to error B0160 or related faults. Water ingress causing corrosion inside the control unit is another well-known source of problems.
