What does error code B01639 mean?
Error code B01639 indicates a severe internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit. This safety-critical fault disables the entire restraint system and points to an irreparable condition of the internal electronics, rendering the control unit unable to perform its monitoring and deployment functions.
Technically speaking, it is an internal device failure often caused by damaged microcontrollers, defective memory chips (EEPROM), or other electronic components on the circuit board. The control unit detects this fault during its internal self-diagnosis and shuts down the entire system for safety reasons.
Unlike faults in external components such as sensors or connectors, B01639 directly signals a malfunction within the control unit itself. This makes professional repair or replacement of the unit essential to restore occupant safety.
What symptoms indicate B01639?
The primary symptom of error code B01639 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. In many cases, the control unit becomes permanently locked following a crash and activation of airbags or seatbelt pretensioners. Crash data stored in memory can no longer be reset using standard workshop testers, which also triggers error code B01639.
These symptoms inevitably result in the vehicle failing the main inspection (TÜV). Operating permission is at risk since the legally required functionality of the restraint system is no longer guaranteed.
What causes B01639?
The primary cause of error code B01639 is an internal hardware defect. This includes faulty electronic components such as capacitors or microcontrollers, EEPROM write errors, or internal short circuits. External factors like voltage surges, moisture damage, or corrosion can also harm the sensitive electronics.
Stored, non-erasable crash data after an accident is another common cause. To prevent malfunction or unintended deployment, the control unit locks itself internally and reports this as an internal error.
Especially in rugged vehicles like the Hummer HMMWV M1038, strong vibrations, dust, or improper jump-start procedures involving reverse polarity can lead to overvoltage damage and trigger error code B01639.
