What does error code B01873 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B01873 points to a specific electrical fault in the driver-side airbag circuit. The airbag control unit has detected a malfunction that could prevent this airbag from deploying correctly in the event of a crash. A professional diagnosis is essential to pinpoint the exact cause.
Technically, the control unit continuously monitors resistance values and the electrical integrity of all ignition circuits. If the measured value in the driver-side airbag circuit deviates from the specified threshold, error code B01873 is stored in the fault memory, and the SRS warning light on the instrument panel illuminates.
This activation serves as a critical safety signal. It indicates that the entire airbag system may be disabled to prevent unintended deployment. The control unit’s self-diagnosis has identified a condition requiring immediate inspection.
How can you recognize error code B01873?
The most obvious sign of error code B01873 is the permanently illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light (SRS symbol) in the cockpit. What causes error code B01873?
The most common cause of error code B01873 is connection issues. Faulty connectors beneath the driver’s seat or corroded contacts at the airbag plug lead to implausible electrical readings. Mechanical wear, such as damage to the coil spring in the steering wheel, is also a typical source of failure.
Seat-mounted connectors are especially vulnerable. Frequent movement during seat adjustments can loosen or break cables, resulting in interruptions or short circuits in the side airbag circuit.
Another critical component is the coil spring, also known as the slip ring. Subjected to mechanical stress with every steering motion, it can fracture over time, disrupting contact with the driver’s airbag and other steering wheel components.
Defective cables or sensors directly within the airbag system can also trigger the error. Less frequently, but still possible, water ingress into the control unit can cause short circuits on the circuit board.
