What does error code B0260 mean in the airbag control unit?
The error code B0260 indicates a serious memory fault in the airbag control unit, also known as the SRS control unit. Specifically, it means the unit is experiencing difficulties reading or writing data in its internal memory. This is a hardware defect that leads to the deactivation of the entire airbag system, putting occupants’ safety at risk.
Technically speaking, this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) points to a physical issue with the memory chips on the control unit’s circuit board. The integrity of the stored data can no longer be guaranteed, making proper operation of the safety system impossible.
Consequently, the control unit cannot reliably process sensor data nor correctly activate the restraint systems in the event of a crash. For safety reasons, the system enters an inactive state and continuously reports error B0260.
The affected components are typically internal memory chips such as flash memory or RAM, whose physical structure has been damaged by aging or external factors.
How do you recognize error B0260?
The most obvious symptom of error B0260 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the error cannot be cleared using a diagnostic tool, and in some cases, communication with the control unit via the OBD2 interface becomes impossible, further complicating diagnosis.
The airbag or SRS warning light remains constantly lit after starting the vehicle and does not extinguish as usual following the initial system check. In some instances, it may initially illuminate sporadically before the error becomes permanent.
Another clear indication is the persistence of the fault. Attempts to clear the fault memory with a diagnostic tool fail; code B0260 reappears immediately, signaling a permanent hardware defect.
In addition, specific warning messages such as “Airbag defective” or “SRS system error” may appear on the instrument cluster display, alerting the driver to the malfunction.
What causes error code B0260?
The primary cause of error code B0260 is physical damage to the memory chips (e.g., flash memory, RAM) on the control unit’s circuit board. Other triggers include age-related wear, short circuits caused by electrical damage, or corrosion from moisture ingress that destroys sensitive electronics.
Defective memory chips are the most common reason. These electronic components have a limited lifespan and can fail due to aging or thermal stress, leading to read/write errors.
Electrical damage within the control unit—such as short circuits or voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system—can harm the delicate traces and solder joints of the memory chips, thereby causing error B0260.
Moisture intrusion and the resulting corrosion are also frequent culprits. Even small amounts of water can permanently damage the electronics and lead to malfunctions in the memory area.
In rarer cases, firmware issues within the control unit may also result in read/write errors that trigger this error code. However, in most situations, the problem stems from a tangible hardware defect.

Error code B0260 occurs across multiple brands, as it reflects a fundamental hardware defect. This issue is particularly well-known in models like the Porsche 911 Targa (992) and the Subaru R2 (RC).
