What does error code B0284 mean?
Error code B0284 is a standardized diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating one or more faults within the airbag control unit system. The cause is often an internal hardware defect in the control unit itself, but it can also be triggered by faulty external components such as sensors or wiring issues. Precise diagnosis requires specialized equipment.
This code signals that the airbag control unit has detected an irregularity that compromises the proper functioning of the entire safety system. As a result, the system switches to a failsafe mode to prevent unintended deployments, which means the airbags will no longer activate in the event of a crash.
The exact source of the fault can vary widely, ranging from defective electronic components on the control unit’s circuit board and sensor malfunctions to communication problems between system components. Therefore, a thorough electronic analysis by qualified technicians is essential.
What symptoms are associated with B0284?
The primary symptom of error B0284 is a continuously illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, communication between a diagnostic tool and the airbag control unit becomes impossible. Consequently, the entire airbag system is disabled, and stored crash data cannot be erased.
The airbag warning light is the most obvious indicator. It remains lit after the vehicle is started, signaling a critical, safety‑related fault to the driver.
Another common symptom is complete loss of communication. Workshops can no longer access the airbag control unit with their diagnostic tools to read or clear errors—the unit does not respond to requests.
If crash data is stored in the control unit, error B0284 often prevents its deletion, even after the underlying issue has been resolved. The system remains locked until professional component‑level repairs are performed.
What causes B0284?
The most frequent cause of B0284 is electronic failure directly within the airbag control unit, such as damaged circuits or corroded traces. Other reasons include faulty sensors, wiring problems like loose connectors, water damage to the control unit, or permanently stored crash data following an accident.
Internal failures of the control unit are a primary source of the problem. These include defective capacitors, microprocessors, or other electronic components on the circuit board that lose functionality.
Faulty sensors—such as those installed in seat occupancy mats, door contacts, or A‑pillars—can also send inconsistent signals to the control unit, which may be interpreted as error B0284.
The peripheral components represent another potential weak point. Damaged cable harnesses, loose connectors (e.g., under the driver’s seat), or corrosion at contact points can disrupt communication and trigger the error code.
Water ingress or high humidity can lead to corrosion on the control unit’s circuit board, causing short circuits and ultimately disabling the device.
Stored crash data that was not properly cleared after an accident, or that cannot be deleted due to a hardware defect, can lock the control unit and result in the persistent display of error B0284.

How is B0284 professionally repaired?

Following this, the actual repair takes place. Damaged parts such as capacitors, resistors, or memory chips are carefully desoldered and replaced with new, high-quality components. Erasing crash data is also part of this process.
After the repair, the control unit is calibrated and subjected to an extensive functional test to ensure full operability. Once reinstalled in the vehicle, it may be necessary to clear the vehicle’s fault memory once. However, in most cases, the warning light will extinguish on its own.
Important safety note: Using simulators or resistors to bypass the fault is life-threatening and illegal. Doing so will result in the revocation of the vehicle’s operating permit.
