What does error code B029 in the airbag control unit indicate?
The error code B029 in an airbag control unit, specifically with part number B029 for the Ford Transit Mk2, indicates a serious internal electronic fault. This is not a malfunction of external components such as sensors, but rather a hardware failure within the control unit itself, requiring repair at the component level.
From an electronic standpoint, this error means that the central control unit has failed its self-diagnosis and has switched to a safety mode. In this state, communication via the diagnostic bus is blocked, rendering the control unit unresponsive. The system classifies itself as unreliable and signals this by keeping the airbag warning light continuously illuminated.
This error code is similar in nature to other internal control unit faults such as B1000, 65535, or 93F9, which also point to defects in the internal electronics—such as crash data stored after an accident or the failure of microcontrollers.

The decisive second symptom is the complete loss of communication. If a workshop attempts to read fault codes or access the control unit, the connection fails. The device does not respond to diagnostic requests, directly pointing suspicion toward an internal defect within the control unit itself.
What causes error code B029?
The causes of error code B029 are almost exclusively due to internal hardware failures. These include electrical damage caused by overvoltage or short circuits, mechanical influences such as vibrations and moisture, as well as memory blockage from crash data following an accident. Software corruption can also play a role.
A very common cause is electrical damage. An unstable power supply, short circuits in the vehicle’s electrical system, or blown fuses can destroy sensitive components on the control unit’s circuit board, often resulting in a total loss of communication—as seen with codes B1000 or 65535.
Mechanical and environmental factors also contribute. Long-term vibrations can weaken solder joints, while penetrating moisture causes corrosion on electronic components, leading to gradual hardware failure.
After an accident, so‑called crash data is irrevocably stored in the control unit’s memory, disabling the device’s functionality and potentially triggering error B029. Similar internal faults that block communication are also associated with codes like 93F9, indicating either an internal hardware failure or voltage spikes.
