What does error code B041 mean?
Error code B041 indicates a specific internal fault in the airbag control unit, particularly affecting the Daewoo Matiz M100 (model years 1998–2000). This code points to a hardware malfunction, often involving the internal memory or module communication, causing the control unit to cease operation and requiring electronic repair.
The airbag control unit is the central control module for all passive safety systems. It processes data from crash sensors and decides within milliseconds whether to deploy airbags and activate seatbelt pretensioners.
If error B041 occurs, the system detects a serious internal defect. As a safety precaution, the airbag warning light illuminates, and the entire system is disabled to prevent unintended deployment.
How can you recognize error B041?
The unmistakable symptom of error code B041 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This warning does not extinguish even after restarting the engine, indicating that the airbag system is completely inoperative due to an internal control unit failure and will not deploy in the event of a crash.
In many cases, conventional diagnostic tools can no longer communicate with or read the control unit. Only specialized equipment can identify error B041 as an internal fault.
Without repairing the control unit, the warning light remains active, and the vehicle will fail the mandatory technical inspection (TÜV) because a safety-critical system has failed.
What causes error B041?
The primary cause of error code B041 is an electronic fault within the airbag control unit’s circuit board itself. This often includes defective memory chips, broken traces, or other hardware components. While external factors such as damaged cables can trigger general airbag errors, B041 specifically points to an internal module or memory issue.
Following a crash, so‑called crash data is stored in the control unit’s memory. This data permanently locks the module, preventing reuse. Erasing this crash data is a critical part of the repair process and can restore the control unit to full functionality.
Other, though less common, direct causes of B041 include moisture damage. Ingressing water can lead to corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board, damaging the sensitive electronics.
Although issues like faulty connectors under the seats, defective seat occupancy mats, or damaged wiring harnesses can also illuminate the airbag warning light, they typically generate different, more specific error codes and are not the primary cause of the internal B041 fault.

Error code B041 is highly specific and almost exclusively associated with the first-generation Daewoo Matiz (M100) airbag control unit. Experience shows that this error code is a well-known problem for this vehicle model, pointing to an internal defect in the installed control unit.
