What does error code B0680 mean?
Error code B0680 indicates a general, internal fault in the airbag control unit. It usually points to a hardware defect caused by internal components, damaged circuit traces, or crash data stored after an accident. A superficial diagnosis is insufficient; electronic repair of the control unit is required to restore full functionality of the airbag system.
Technically speaking, this code signals that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected an anomaly in its own circuits or internal memory. The system classifies this condition as critical and proactively deactivates the airbag functions to prevent false activations. The root cause often lies deep within the module’s electronics itself.
For an accurate analysis, specialized diagnostic tools—such as those from Bosch or Gutmann—are essential. Standard OBD2 scanners often cannot correctly read or interpret the specific manufacturer codes in the airbag system, which can lead to misdiagnoses.
How do you recognize error B0680?
The most obvious symptom of error code B0680 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. After starting the engine, the warning light fails to turn off, indicating an active, safety‑critical fault in the restraint system. The vehicle thus reports that the airbags would not deploy in the event of a crash.
In many cases, the airbag control unit can no longer be accessed with standard diagnostic tools. Communication is blocked because the module enters a safety mode upon detecting the internal fault. This makes diagnosis challenging for workshops lacking the appropriate specialized equipment.
Additional error messages may appear in the onboard computer, but the glowing airbag light remains the most consistent and primary indicator of this specific error code.
What causes error code B0680?
The main causes of error B0680 are varied and typically reside directly within the control unit. First and foremost are internal hardware defects, followed by crash data irreversibly stored after an accident. External factors such as faulty sensors or damaged cables can also trigger the error.
One of the most common causes is internal damage to the control unit’s circuit board. These include short circuits caused by moisture, cold solder joints, defective electronic components, or damaged circuit traces—all of which prevent proper processing of system data.
After a crash, the control unit stores so‑called crash data. This data permanently locks the module, preventing further use—even if the accident was minor. Error B0680 may indicate such a lock, which can only be lifted through specialized repair.
Problems in peripheral components can also give rise to this error code. These include faulty airbag sensors, corroded or vibration‑damaged connectors, and damaged cable harnesses that send implausible signals to the control unit.
