What does error code B073 mean?
Error code B073 indicates an internal, hardware-based electronic fault in the airbag control unit (SRS module). The cause is usually located directly on the control board—such as defective components, damaged solder joints, corrosion, or safety‑related crash data stored in the module that triggers a lockout.
B‑error codes (body codes) like B073, B0070, or B1180 typically point to issues within the control unit itself or its immediate circuitry. Unlike external sensor faults, this code signals a defect in the internal electronics. The control unit detects an inconsistency or failure in its own monitoring or actuation circuits through self‑diagnosis.
From an electronic standpoint, this could mean that a voltage regulator, capacitor, resistor, or another SMD component is operating outside its specified tolerance. Such defects prevent the system from guaranteeing proper functionality and, for safety reasons, activate the airbag warning light.
How do you recognize error B073?
The primary symptom of error B073 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the control unit can no longer be accessed with a standard diagnostic tool, or the fault memory cannot be cleared, indicating an internal lockout.
The airbag warning lamp remains lit immediately after starting the engine and does not extinguish as usual. This is a clear indication that the airbag system (SRS) is disabled and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
Another common sign is a lack of communication. When attempting to read the fault memory with an OBD or SRS diagnostic device, the control unit may fail to respond, behaving as if it were not present on the CAN bus network.
In addition, vehicle‑specific warning messages may appear on the display, indicating a fault in the occupant protection system or the seatbelt pretensioners.
What causes B073?
The main causes of error code B073 are hardware defects on the control unit’s circuit board. These include aged or failed SMD components, corrosion at solder joints and traces caused by moisture, as well as stored crash data that permanently locks the module after an accident.
One of the most frequent causes is defective electronic components. Over time, capacitors may lose their capacitance, resistors may drift in value, or transistors (FETs) and voltage regulators may fail. These components are responsible for precisely controlling pyrotechnic devices such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners.
Penetrating moisture leads to corrosion at delicate solder joints and connector contacts. This results in short circuits or leakage currents on the board, which the internal monitoring system identifies as a serious fault.
Following an accident involving airbag deployment, the control unit stores so‑called crash data. This data irreversibly locks the module to prevent reuse. This condition is often reported as an internal B073 error or a similar B‑code.
Although the fault is internal, external factors such as damaged wiring harnesses or connectors—especially beneath the seats—should also be examined as potential triggers. This is particularly true for Porsche models, where this issue is well known.
Which models experience error B073?
Error code B073 is a well‑known internal defect across various vehicle manufacturers. At Airbag24, this error code is frequently diagnosed and successfully repaired in Porsche models, especially the Porsche 718 Boxster T.
The generation of control units installed in this vehicle type tends to develop internal hardware faults due to aging electronics or environmental influences. Repair procedures for B073 are often identical to those used for similar error codes, such as B023, within the same device family.
How does repair work at Airbag24?
