What does error code B0911 mean in the airbag control unit?
The error code B0911 indicates an internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS module). In most cases, it is a hardware issue on the circuit board, such as defective components or an internal short circuit. The control unit cannot successfully complete its self-diagnosis and, for safety reasons, deactivates the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, B0911 is an OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) error code set by the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The control unit performs a self-test every time the vehicle is started. If an inconsistency is detected in the internal circuitry, memory, or critical components like capacitors, resistors, or integrated circuits (ICs), this error is logged.
The message “Airbag Control Module Internal Fault” suggests that the root cause lies directly within the module itself, not in external components such as the airbags or sensors. The control unit enters a safe but inactive state.
How do you recognize error B0911?
The primary symptom of error B0911 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the airbag control unit may become unresponsive via the OBD-II interface, refusing communication with diagnostic tools. This points to a serious internal malfunction.
The airbag warning light is the clearest indication for the driver. Unlike usual, it does not turn off after starting the engine but remains lit continuously, signaling a problem in the safety system.
Another clear sign for the workshop is the lack of communication. When a technician attempts to read the fault memory, the diagnostic tool may fail to establish a connection with the SRS module, confirming that the control unit is internally blocked or damaged.
The most severe consequence is the deactivation of the entire restraint system. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
What causes B0911?
The main cause of error code B0911 is an internal hardware failure within the control unit itself, often due to the failure of electronic components. Another common cause is stored crash data following an accident, which can lock the module. Overvoltage damage or faulty connectors can also trigger this error.
An internal fault in the airbag control unit is the most frequent cause. This includes defective components on the circuit board, cold solder joints, short circuits, or damage caused by moisture and corrosion. The complex electronics are subject to aging, which can lead to such failures.
Stored crash data is another typical cause. After an airbag deployment, the control unit permanently saves these event records and locks itself out. This condition is often reported as an internal B0911 error and cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools.
Overvoltage damage—such as from improper jump-starting or a faulty charger—can destroy sensitive voltage regulators and other components inside the control unit, resulting in error B0911.
In rarer cases, external factors like defective crash sensors or broken wiring in the harness can lead to electrical instability, causing internal damage to the control unit and subsequently triggering error B0911.
