What does error code B100111 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code B100111 indicates a specific electrical fault: a short circuit at igniter 2 of the driver’s side airbag. This fault is particularly well-known in the Audi Q4 e-tron (from 2021 onwards) and points to a critical malfunction in the ignition circuit that directly compromises the airbag’s functionality.
Technically, this means the airbag control unit detects an abnormal electrical value—such as excessively low resistance or a direct connection to ground or the vehicle’s supply voltage—in the driver airbag’s ignition circuit. The control unit interprets this as a short circuit.
Due to this fault, proper deployment of the airbag in the event of a crash can no longer be guaranteed. Consequently, the system illuminates the airbag warning light and stores the error code to alert the driver to the immediate danger.
How can you recognize error B100111?
The most obvious symptom of error B100111 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It signals an active, safety‑relevant fault in the restraint system that requires immediate inspection.
The warning light typically turns on right after the engine starts and remains lit permanently. Occasional flashing is uncommon with this type of short‑circuit fault.
In addition, a message may appear in the Driver Information System (FIS), indicating a malfunction in the airbag system. When reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool, error code B100111 will be displayed as the specific cause.
What causes error code B100111?
The primary cause of B100111 is an actual electrical short in the driver airbag’s ignition circuit. This is usually triggered by a defective igniter, damaged wiring, or corroded connectors—often located beneath the driver’s seat or near the steering column.
A defect within the airbag igniter itself or in the ignition cartridge is a common culprit. Internal shorts inside the component cause the control unit to immediately detect and report the fault.
Damaged cables or connectors are another frequent source of failure. Seat adjustments or vibrations can cause wires in the airbag control unit’s wiring harness to fray, break, or lose insulation, leading to a short circuit.
Corrosion caused by moisture ingress at the connectors of the control unit or the airbag can also distort electrical readings and simulate a short circuit.
In rarer cases, crash data stored in the control unit after an accident may lead to malfunctions until it is professionally cleared.
