What does error code B1010-001 mean?
Error code B1010-001 indicates a critical undervoltage or a problem with the power supply to the airbag control unit, specifically at terminal 15 (ignition positive). The unit cannot perform its safety‑critical functions because the operating voltage is unstable or absent, leading to deactivation of the entire restraint system.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit (SRS module) continuously monitors its own supply voltage. Terminal 15 provides the voltage as soon as the vehicle’s ignition is turned on. If this voltage drops below a manufacturer‑specific threshold, the control unit interprets it as a serious fault.
As a safety precaution, the entire airbag system is disabled to prevent unintended deployment under unstable voltage conditions. The airbag warning light illuminates to alert the driver that, in the event of a crash, there will be no protection from airbags or seatbelt pretensioners.
What symptoms indicate B1010-001?
The primary symptom of error code B1010-001 is a permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the error code cannot be cleared even after a reset. In some cases, communication with the control unit via an OBD2 diagnostic tool also becomes impossible, although the vehicle remains drivable.
The airbag warning light (SRS) is the most obvious sign. It stays lit continuously or, in some instances, flashes sporadically, indicating an unstable power supply. The fault remains stored until the underlying cause is resolved.
Another typical feature is the loss of diagnostic capability. When a workshop attempts to read the fault memory, the control unit may fail to respond. This occurs because the undervoltage also disrupts the device’s communication processes.
Despite the active fault, the vehicle remains drivable. The engine and other systems are unaffected. However, the safety risk is significant, as the entire restraint system—including all airbags and seatbelt pretensioners—is inoperative.
What causes B1010-001?
The most common causes of B1010-001 are external issues with the vehicle’s electrical system. These include a defective or weak battery, a faulty alternator, and problems in the wiring harness such as broken wires or short circuits. Corroded connectors on the control unit itself can also trigger this error.
A weak or aging vehicle battery is the primary culprit. Especially during startup, the voltage can drop so sharply that the airbag control unit detects undervoltage and stores error code B1010-001. A defective alternator that fails to charge the battery properly produces the same result.
Damage to the wiring harness leading to the control unit is another frequent source of failure. A short circuit or a broken wire in the feed line to terminal 15 reliably interrupts the power supply.
Corrosion and moisture at the control unit’s connector plugs are particularly critical. Since these units are often installed beneath seats or in the footwell, spilled liquids or penetrating moisture can lead to contact issues and leakage currents. Faulty fuses or relays in the power path should also be inspected.
Which vehicles are affected by B1010-001?
Error code B1010-001 frequently occurs in various Mercedes-Benz models. In particular, the Mercedes-Benz CL C216 Coupe from model years 2006 to 2013 is well known for this issue. Airbag24 offers specialized repairs for the control units installed in these vehicles.
