Error code B1049 indicates a critical interruption or an open circuit in the driver airbag’s ignition circuit. Technically, this means the airbag control unit cannot establish a closed electrical circuit to the driver airbag, preventing it from deploying in an emergency. The cause is almost always a hardware defect in the slip ring or within the control unit’s electronics itself.

In detail, the airbag control unit performs a self-diagnosis every time the vehicle is started. During this process, a small test current is sent through all ignition circuits to measure their resistance. If the system detects an infinitely high resistance in the driver airbag circuit (often referred to as the “Driver Squib Circuit”), it interprets this as an “open circuit” or interruption and sets error code B1049.
