What does error code B1064 mean?
Error code B1064 indicates a specific issue in the circuit of the driver-side airbag sensor. The diagnostic message reads “Driver Side Airbag Sensor Signal Too High or Circuit Open,” pointing to an electrical fault. For safety reasons, the airbag control unit (SRS) then deactivates parts of the system.
From an electronic standpoint, the control unit continuously monitors the resistance and signal voltage of each sensor in the airbag system. An open circuit means there is a break in the wiring, such as a cable rupture or a loose connector. A signal that is too high usually points to an internal defect within the sensor itself, which sends incorrect readings to the control unit.
In both cases, the system detects an anomaly that could prevent the side airbags from functioning correctly in the event of a crash. To avoid false deployment and alert the driver to the fault, error code B1064 is stored in the fault memory, and the airbag warning light illuminates.
How can you recognize error code B1064?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1064 is the airbag warning light on the instrument panel, which remains steadily illuminated or flashes. This indicates an active fault in the restraint system that requires immediate inspection, as the protective function of the airbags is no longer guaranteed.
The airbag warning light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle as usual; instead, it stays on continuously. This is a clear indication that the control unit has detected a safety-critical fault and logged it in its memory.
In some vehicles, a text message may also appear on the onboard computer’s display, signaling a problem with the airbag system. A diagnosis using a suitable OBD-II scanner confirms the suspicion by reading out code B1064 along with its corresponding description.
What are the most common causes of B1064?
The causes of error code B1064 are almost exclusively hardware-related and lie within the physical circuitry of the sensor. The main culprits are defective side airbag sensors, cable breaks, or issues with electrical connectors. A malfunction in the airbag control unit itself is less frequent but not impossible.
A faulty driver-side airbag sensor is one of the most common causes. The sensor itself is electronically damaged and sends implausible or excessively high signals to the control unit.
A break in the circuit—such as a severed cable or a loose connection—is another typical cause. Especially in vehicles where seats are frequently adjusted, like 3-door models, the wiring beneath the seat can suffer mechanical stress and eventually fail.
Poor-quality or corroded connectors prevent a clean signal flow. Water ingress into the vehicle interior can lead to corrosion at the contacts and cause short circuits.
In rarer cases, the root cause may be an internal defect in the airbag control unit, where the input circuit for the relevant sensor is damaged.
Related error codes in the airbag system
Error code B1064 can occur alongside other airbag system error codes, indicating more extensive problems. Recognizing these related codes is crucial for a complete diagnosis, enabling identification and resolution of all potential sources of failure within the restraint system.
Frequently accompanying error codes include B0022, B0021, B0026, B0116, B0014, B0032, B0101, B0013, B0001, B0086, U0140, U0170, B0081, B1150, B1157, or B1170. These may point to issues with other sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, or the system’s internal communication.

Although error code B1064 can theoretically occur across various manufacturers, it is diagnosed more often in specific vehicle models. This error code is particularly well-known in the Pontiac G8 from model years 2008–2009. However, a precise diagnosis is essential for every vehicle.
