What does error code B1087 mean?
Error code B1087 indicates a problem in the ignition circuit of the passenger-side airbag. Technically, this means that the airbag control unit is detecting either an excessively low signal or an excessively high resistance in the ignition coil circuit. This suggests an open circuit or a fault in the wiring, which could prevent the airbag from deploying in an emergency.
The airbag control unit (SRS module) performs a self-diagnosis every time the vehicle is started and continuously monitors the resistance values of all safety‑related components, including the airbag ignition circuits. If the measured resistance deviates from the specified value—such as in cases of a broken wire, a corroded connector, or a defective internal component—the B1087 error is stored in the fault memory.
As a result, the airbag warning light illuminates, and the affected system is deactivated for safety reasons. The “signal too low” message can be misleading; it usually refers to excessively high resistance or a complete break in the circuit.
How do you recognize error code B1087?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1087 is the persistent illumination of the airbag warning light on the instrument panel. The light does not turn off after starting the engine, indicating an active, safety‑relevant fault in the system. In this condition, the entire restraint system may be deactivated as a precaution.
Additional specific messages on the driver’s display are uncommon. A precise diagnosis can only be obtained by reading the fault memory with a suitable OBD2 diagnostic tool, which will explicitly show code B1087.
What causes error code B1087?
The main cause of error code B1087 is typically physical defects in the wiring and connectors leading to the passenger-side airbag. Often, these are damaged connectors beneath the seat, subjected to stress from seat adjustments. However, faulty components such as the seatbelt pretensioner or the seat occupancy mat can also trigger the error.
One of the most common causes is defective cable connections. Especially the connectors under the front seats experience significant mechanical stress due to constant seat movement, leading to loose contacts, broken wires, or corroded pins.
Crimped or broken lines connecting to the sensors or the airbag module itself can also improperly alter the resistance in the ignition circuit and activate error code B1087. This often occurs in vehicles where interior modifications have been carried out afterward.
Other potential sources of failure include a defective seatbelt pretensioner, a malfunctioning seat occupancy mat, or—in rarer cases—a defective spiral spring on the steering wheel, even though this primarily affects the driver’s airbag. Each of these components is part of the monitored restraint system.
In which vehicles does error code B1087 occur?
Error code B1087 is particularly well‑known in certain models of the VAG Group. Specifically, this fault is frequently diagnosed in the first‑generation Skoda Roomster Scout (Mk1). However, the error can also appear in other vehicles where the wiring beneath the seats is exposed to similar mechanical stresses.
