What does B1104 indicate in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1104 signifies a serious hardware fault directly within the airbag control unit. This points to a defect in the module’s electronic hardware, such as memory chips or internal circuit traces. The control unit detects this internal fault and reports it, which may result in deactivation of the airbag system.
Technically speaking, B1104 means that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has identified an internal issue in its own circuits. This is not a report on an external sensor or actuator, but rather a problem with the processing unit itself.
Possible causes include damaged wire connections on the circuit board, defective memory chips leading to incomplete data transmission, or damage caused by water ingress resulting in short circuits.
How do you recognize error code B1104?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1104 is the persistent or intermittent illumination of the airbag warning light (SRS symbol) in the instrument cluster. This warning alerts the driver that the restraint system is not functioning properly and no longer ensures occupant safety in the event of a crash.
The warning light typically remains illuminated even after restarting the vehicle. Clearing the fault memory using a standard diagnostic tool is often impossible, or the fault reappears immediately.
Detecting the fault requires reading the fault memory via the OBD2 diagnostic interface. It is crucial to ensure that the diagnostic software used is up-to-date to correctly identify the error.
What causes B1104?
The main cause of error code B1104 is an internal hardware defect within the control unit itself.
