B1111 - Airbagsteuergerät defekt airbag control unit fault

Your vehicle isn't listed?

Error “B1111” isn't linked to every vehicle in our database – we can usually repair the airbag control unit anyway. Select your vehicle and we'll show you the matching repair:

What does error code B1111 mean in the airbag control unit?

Error code B1111 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit. This could be either a hardware issue with electronic components or an error in the software configuration. The control unit can no longer guarantee its safety functions, causing the SRS warning light to remain constantly illuminated.

Technically speaking, B1111 means that the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected an implausible or faulty component or configuration state.

This can range from a physically damaged component to a corrupted calibration file, which puts the system into a safety mode and prevents clearing the fault memory.

How do you recognize error B1111?

The primary symptom of error B1111 is a continuously lit or intermittently flashing SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Another clear indication is that the fault memory cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools. Error code B1111 remains persistently stored in the system.

The airbag warning light unmistakably informs the driver that the entire restraint system is not operational. In the event of a crash, deployment of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners is no longer guaranteed.

Workshops also observe that attempts to clear the fault immediately fail, or the error reappears very quickly—sometimes after just a few minutes or kilometers.

What causes B1111?

The most common cause of error B1111 is an internal hardware defect in the control unit, such as failed electronic components. Other reasons include incorrect software configurations, communication disruptions due to voltage issues (e.g., at terminal 15R), or crash data stored in memory after an accident, which locks the device.

Actual internal defects on the control unit’s circuit board represent a primary cause. These can arise from aging, thermal stress, or physical damage to microprocessors or memory chips.

An incorrect or damaged calibration—often resulting from improper programming attempts or faulty software updates—can also put the control unit into an unerasable error state.

Power supply disturbances or faulty signals at the 15R power terminal can likewise trigger communication errors, which the control unit interprets and stores as an internal fault.

After a crash, relevant crash data is permanently saved in the control unit’s memory. This “crash-lock” function leads to persistent error codes like B1111 and can only be reset through specialized repair.

Which vehicles are affected by B1111?

Error code B1111 occurs across manufacturers and various models. Vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Dodge, Hummer, and Toyota are particularly frequently affected. Examples include the Mercedes A-Class (W169), the Peugeot 301, the Dodge Charger, and the Toyota Corolla (E120).

At Airbag24, we repair airbag control units displaying error code B1111 for a wide range of vehicles. Our expertise covers the following models:

Mercedes-Benz: A-Class W169 (2004–2012), B-Class W247 (from 2018)

Peugeot: 301 I (2012–2016) as well as the facelift model (from 2017)

Dodge: Charger 6th generation (2006–2010)

Hummer: H1 Slantback

Toyota: Corolla E120 (2001–2004) and the facelift model (2004–2007)

How is error B1111 professionally repaired?

Professional repair of error B1111 involves precise diagnostics, deletion of stored crash data, and—if necessary—reprogramming of the software configuration. After removal and shipment to Airbag24, the control unit is analyzed on specialized test benches and expertly refurbished.

The process begins with reading the fault memory at a qualified workshop to reliably rule out external sources of error, such as wiring. This is a crucial step before removing the expensive control unit.

Following shipment of the removed control unit to Airbag24, a comprehensive device inspection takes place. All internal components and the software are examined to pinpoint the exact cause of the fault.

Depending on the nature of the fault, crash data stored in memory is erased using specialized software, the software configuration is reloaded with correct calibration data, or defective components on the circuit board are repaired.

Finally, rigorous testing ensures flawless functionality before the control unit is returned. You receive a 12-month warranty on the completed repair.

Is Repairing the Control Unit Worth It?

Yes, in most cases, repair is the most cost-effective solution. Compared to the high price of a new part, which often requires additional coding, refurbishment offers significant savings. Moreover, it provides a quick and sustainable alternative to expensive replacement.

The cost of a new airbag control unit is considerably higher than that of a repair. A professional diagnosis beforehand ensures that an expensive replacement part isn’t purchased unnecessarily when only the original component needs repair.

Even simply clearing the fault memory at an authorized service center is often not a lasting fix. As documented with Mercedes-Benz models, error code B1111 can reappear after just a few minutes or kilometers, since the underlying cause remains unresolved.

In contrast, a proper repair addresses the root cause—whether hardware, software, or stored crash data—and restores the original control unit to full functionality.
