What does error code B1116 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1116 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). In most cases, it points to a clear hardware defect, where components on the circuit board—such as capacitors, ICs, or memory chips—have failed. The control unit can no longer successfully perform its self-tests and, for safety reasons, deactivates the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, B1116 suggests that the internal logic or hardware of the control unit is no longer functioning correctly. This may result from wear and tear of electronic components, a short circuit on the circuit board, a memory error, or damage caused by moisture ingress.
Communication issues with the vehicle’s internal CAN bus or errors during the control unit’s startup sequence (boot process) can also trigger this code, but these are often secondary effects of the primary hardware failure. Once this error is active, the protective function of the airbags is no longer guaranteed.
How do you recognize error B1116?
The primary symptom of error B1116 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster. Often, the control unit can no longer be accessed using a diagnostic tool, and the error code cannot be permanently cleared after being erased, as it represents a static hardware fault.
The illumination of the SRS indicator light is an unmistakable signal to the driver that a critical issue exists within the safety system. In this state, the system is completely disabled, meaning that in the event of a crash, neither the airbags nor the seatbelt pretensioners would deploy.
Another clear sign in the workshop is the lack of communication with the control unit. When attempting to read the fault memory via the OBD2 interface, the diagnostic tool frequently receives no response from the SRS module, confirming suspicions of a severe internal defect.
What causes error B1116?
The main cause of error code B1116 is the age-related failure of electronic components on the control unit’s main circuit board, particularly capacitors, integrated circuits (ICs), and relays. Other common causes include moisture damage, corrosion, or damage resulting from voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system.
Over time, electronic components such as electrolytic capacitors lose their capacitance or develop leakage currents, leading to malfunctions throughout the circuitry. This type of wear is the most frequent cause in older vehicles.
Infiltrating moisture—often due to a leaking body seal—can inflict devastating damage. It causes corrosion at solder joints and conductor traces, potentially triggering short circuits that irreparably damage the control unit.
Electrical disturbances, such as voltage spikes arising—for example—during jump-starts performed with incorrect polarity, can also destroy the control unit’s sensitive microelectronics. Less commonly, mechanical damage following a collision or corrupted firmware may be responsible.
