What does error code B1125 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1125 indicates a critical communication fault on the CAN bus affecting the airbag control unit. The control unit can no longer exchange data with other key vehicle components, such as the instrument cluster or the engine control unit. This results in the deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, this error signals an interruption or malfunction on the vehicle’s data highway. As a result, the airbag control unit becomes isolated and cannot receive signals from the sensors or deploy the airbags in the event of a crash. The cause may lie either outside or inside the control unit itself.
Internal defects often include faulty hardware components, such as the CAN‑bus transceiver responsible for transmitting and receiving data signals, or damaged memory chips. Stored crash data following an accident can also put the unit into a communication standstill.
What symptoms appear with error B1125?
The primary indication of error B1125 is a continuously illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the dashboard. Additionally, it is often impossible to establish a connection to the airbag control unit using a diagnostic tool, as communication is completely blocked.
The airbag warning light is the clearest signal to the driver that there is a serious problem with the restraint system. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle and indicates that the safety functions have been disabled.
Another clear symptom for workshops is the failed communication attempt. When reading the fault memory, the diagnostic tool typically reports “No communication with airbag control unit” or explicitly states a “CAN‑bus error.” The control unit does not respond to requests.
Since the CAN bus serves as a central network for many control units, other systems—such as the immobilizer, the climate control, or the lighting—may also be affected by the communication disruption and exhibit malfunctions.
What are the most common causes of error code B1125?
The main causes of B1125 are interruptions in the CAN‑bus wiring due to cable breaks or corrosion, an internal hardware defect within the airbag control unit itself, or crash data stored in memory that prevents further communication and effectively locks the unit.
Often, the issue lies in the physical wiring. Poor connector contacts, corroded connections, or short circuits in the CAN‑bus system prevent clean data exchange between control units. A thorough inspection of the wiring harness leading to the airbag control unit is therefore an essential first step.
If the wiring is intact, the cause usually resides within the control unit itself. Defective components such as the CAN‑bus transceiver, voltage regulators, or memory chips can disrupt communication. These hardware failures require chip‑level repair.
Following a crash, so‑called crash data is permanently stored in the control unit’s memory. While this safeguard ensures safety, it also prevents the unit from participating in normal vehicle operation and triggers error B1125.
