What does error code B1129 mean?
Error code B1129 indicates a critical malfunction in the ignition circuit of the airbag control unit (SRS module). This means the control unit is experiencing an issue monitoring or triggering one or more airbag ignition circuits. As a result, the affected airbags are deactivated, posing a significant safety risk.
Technically, the control unit detects an irregularity—whether it’s a short circuit, an open circuit, or an implausible resistance value—in the electrical circuit responsible for igniting an airbag unit. In this state, the system can no longer guarantee that the airbag will deploy correctly in the event of a crash.
Due to the safety-critical nature of this fault, the entire airbag system—or parts of it—are preemptively disabled to prevent unintended deployments. The error remains permanently stored in the unit’s fault memory.
What symptoms indicate error code B1129?
The primary symptom of error code B1129 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument panel. In many cases, a corresponding message also appears on the vehicle’s display. Reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool confirms the specific B1129 code.
The airbag warning light (typically a stylized pictogram of a passenger with an airbag) stays lit after the engine starts and does not extinguish as usual following the self‑diagnostic routine. This is a clear indication of an active, stored fault within the SRS system.
In some instances, communication with the airbag control unit via a diagnostic tool may be limited, even though the error code can still be read. It’s important to note that an active airbag warning light represents a serious defect that can lead to failure during the main vehicle inspection (TÜV).
What causes error code B1129?
The most common causes of B1129 include physical defects in the wiring harness, such as damaged cables or connector issues—often located beneath the seats or at the coil spring. Other triggers may include moisture ingress into the control unit, faulty sensors in the ignition circuit, or an internal hardware failure within the airbag control unit itself.
Defective cables or connectors are among the leading causes. Particularly in vehicles where the front seats are frequently adjusted—such as 3‑door models—the cable bundles under the seats can break, or the connector contacts may corrode, resulting in excessively high contact resistance.
Water intrusion or high humidity inside the vehicle cabin can cause corrosion on the control unit’s circuit board, leading to short circuits between traces responsible for monitoring the ignition circuits.
A further typical weak point is the coil spring—also known as the spiral cable—in the steering wheel. Continuous rotational movement during steering can cause the flat ribbon cable inside to fracture, interrupting the driver‑airbag ignition circuit and triggering error code B1129.
Finally, an internal defect within the control unit itself may also be the root cause. Electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, or driver ICs responsible for the ignition circuits can fail due to aging or electrical overload.
