What does error code B1148 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1148 indicates a specific electrical fault—namely, a short circuit in the right-side curtain airbag circuit. The airbag control unit detects this hardware failure, illuminates the airbag warning light, and, for safety reasons, deactivates the entire restraint system until the issue is resolved.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit (SRS module) continuously monitors the resistance of all ignition circuits. A short circuit, such as the one indicated by B1148, causes a drastic drop in this resistance value. The system interprets this as a critical fault that prevents the airbag from functioning safely.
The official designation of the fault—such as “Right Side Curtain Air Bag Module Short Circuit” at Nissan—clearly points to a problem either in the wiring or within the airbag module itself. Until the fault is fixed, the protective function of the side airbag—and often the entire system—is no longer guaranteed.
How can you recognize error B1148?
The primary symptom of error B1148 is the airbag warning light that remains constantly illuminated on the instrument panel. This light does not turn off after the vehicle is started. Accompanying messages such as “Airbag System Malfunction” or “SRS Error” may also appear in the onboard computer, indicating an issue with the restraint system.
The airbag warning light is the driver’s main—and often only—indication of the problem. Since a short circuit represents a permanent, physical fault, the light typically stays on continuously rather than flashing sporadically.
An accurate diagnosis is possible only by reading the fault memory using a suitable diagnostic tool. Only then can the fault be unequivocally linked to code B1148 and the right-side curtain airbag.
What causes error B1148?
The most common cause of B1148 is physical damage to the wiring harness leading to the right-side curtain airbag. Often, cables in the roof frame or door pillars are pinched or abraded. Other causes include faulty connectors or an internal short circuit within the airbag module or directly in the control unit itself.
A frequent source of errors is damaged wiring. This can occur during previous repairs to the headliner, interior trim, or when installing aftermarket accessories. Aging and vibrations can also degrade cable insulation, leading to short circuits.
Defective connectors are another typical culprit. Moisture ingress can cause corrosion at the contacts, altering electrical resistance and triggering a short circuit.
In rarer cases, the fault lies directly within the airbag module or the airbag control unit. An internal short circuit on the circuit board caused by defective electronic components can likewise trigger error code B1148.
Which vehicles experience error B1148?
Error code B1148 occurs specifically in certain models from Nissan and Infiniti. Vehicles whose airbag systems are designed to activate side airbags (curtain airbags) are particularly affected. Repairing the control unit here is a proven alternative to replacing the expensive new part.
