What does error code B1149 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1149 in the airbag control unit indicates a critical fault in the ignition circuit or an open circuit within the airbag system. This typically affects the driver’s airbag. The cause is usually a hardware or connection issue, such as a broken cable or a contact failure, which could prevent the airbag from deploying in an emergency.
Technically, the control unit detects that the electrical resistance in the ignition circuit falls outside the predefined tolerance. This can result in either a complete interruption (open circuit) or a short circuit. In response, the system enters a safety mode and deactivates the affected airbag circuit to prevent unintended deployment.
The precise location of the fault is stored in the control unit’s internal memory. A professional diagnostic tool can determine whether the fault is persistent or intermittent and identify which specific ignition circuit—such as ignition circuit 1 on the driver’s side—is affected.
What symptoms indicate B1149?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1149 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This signals that the occupant protection system is not fully operational. In some cases, specific warning messages may also appear on the display.
Once the control unit registers error code B1149, the airbag warning light activates and remains on after the engine starts. Unlike normal operation, where it should extinguish after a few seconds, this persistent illumination clearly indicates a safety‑related malfunction.
Another possible symptom is that, during diagnostics, while the airbag control unit can be read, error code B1149 cannot be cleared. As long as the physical cause—the circuit interruption—remains, the error code will reappear immediately.
What causes B1149?
The main causes of error code B1149 are physical defects in the wiring or connectors of the airbag system. Common culprits include damaged cables, corroded contacts at the airbag connectors, a faulty coil spring in the steering wheel, or an internal defect on the control unit’s circuit board itself.
A very common source of trouble is the coil spring (also known as the slip ring) behind the steering wheel. Due to constant rotational movement, this area can develop cable breaks or contact issues that disrupt the electrical circuit to the driver’s airbag.
Similarly, poor connector connections—such as those under the seats or directly at the airbag module—can trigger the error. Vibrations or improper work inside the vehicle cabin may lead to loose connections. Less frequently, but still possible, water or moisture damage to the control unit can cause corrosion and damage to the circuit traces on the board.
It is advisable to check the fault memory for additional codes as well. Sometimes B1149 occurs alongside other errors, such as B1015, which points to a general fault in the control unit, or faults related to seat occupancy sensors. The power supply and associated fuse of the control unit should also be inspected.

Although error code B1149 is manufacturer‑independent, it specifically appears in conjunction with certain control units. This error code is particularly relevant for premium vehicles like the Bentley Mulsanne Turbo Mk1. The repair methodology for this fault is comparable across many brands.
