What does error code B1153 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1153 is a generic diagnostic code that primarily appears in Lexus models such as the GX470, signaling a system integrity fault within the airbag system. Crucially, the root cause is often not an internal defect of the control unit itself, but rather a peripheral issue—such as a faulty seatbelt buckle or its wiring harness.
Technically speaking, the Airbag Control Unit (ACU) detects an inconsistency or interruption in the circuit responsible for monitoring the seatbelt pretensioners and buckle sensors. As a result, the system can no longer reliably determine the status of the seatbelt components and, for safety reasons, illuminates the airbag warning light.
Therefore, this error code does not necessarily point to an expensive control unit failure; instead, it calls for a thorough inspection of the entire seatbelt system on the affected side. Only after ruling out all external components—such as cables, connectors, and the buckle itself—as potential sources of the problem does the control unit become the focus of diagnosis.
How do you recognize error code B1153?
The primary symptom of error code B1153 is an activated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster, which either remains steadily illuminated or flashes intermittently. In particular, on the Lexus GX470, this light often appears sporadically without any prior accident. In some cases, communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool may also be disrupted.
The most obvious sign is the glowing SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) or airbag indicator light. This light fails to extinguish after starting the engine or flickers on and off during driving, indicating a contact issue.
Another characteristic is that diagnostic tools either receive no data from the airbag control unit or only report erroneous readings. The control unit does not respond to queries, complicating troubleshooting—but this does not necessarily signify total failure.
What causes error code B1153?
The most common cause of error code B1153, especially in the Lexus GX470, is a defective seatbelt buckle or a broken wiring harness due to aging and material fatigue. Less frequently, loose electrical connections under the seat are to blame. An internal defect in the control unit is rare and should only be considered after thoroughly inspecting the external components.
First and foremost is wear and tear on the seatbelt buckle and its associated wiring harness. Constant movement makes the harness brittle, leading to cable breaks or intermittent connections. Replacing the complete seatbelt buckle assembly resolves the issue in most cases.
Another widespread cause involves loose electrical connectors beneath the driver’s or passenger’s seat. Adjustments to the seat position or vibrations over time can gradually loosen these connections. Simply disconnecting and reconnecting them with the ignition off can often provide a quick fix.
Only in rare instances is there an actual defect in the airbag control unit itself. Possible triggers include stored crash data following an accident, damage caused by voltage surges, or failure of internal electronic components. Low battery voltage can also occasionally lead to erroneous entries.

If the control unit itself is defective, it is removed and sent to Airbag24. There, a comprehensive analysis takes place, including clearing crash data and repairing internal defects, before the unit is tested and returned to the customer.
The first and most critical step in our workshop is a physical inspection of the connectors beneath the seat and the wiring harness leading to the seatbelt buckle. Any visibly damaged components are replaced immediately. This step is essential to avoid unnecessary repairs to the control unit.
If the root cause lies within the control unit, Airbag24 follows a standardized procedure. Upon receipt, the unit is tested on a diagnostic bench. Subsequently, any stored crash data is erased, and defective components on the circuit board are replaced. Finally, the device is reset to factory settings.
