What does error code B1157/15 mean in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1157/15 indicates a critical fault in the airbag control unit (SRS module), typically an airbag deployment signal error or an internal hardware defect. Often, this code is triggered by crash data stored after an accident, which causes the control unit to lock itself. Component failures such as defective memory cells or short circuits can also be the cause.
Technically speaking, B1157/15 is a manufacturer-specific OBD-II body code (B-code) that points to a problem within the safety system. Following a triggering event—such as a crash—the control unit stores non-erasable crash data in its internal memory. This procedure serves as a safety measure to prevent continued use of a potentially compromised system.
In addition to stored crash data, the fault may also arise from a purely electronic defect on the control unit’s circuit board. Possible causes include faulty memory chips, moisture-induced short circuits, or an incorrect power supply that prevents the module’s internal self-diagnosis from functioning properly.
Typical symptoms of error B1157/15
The primary and most obvious symptom of error B1157/15 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS light) on the instrument cluster. In many cases, communication with the control unit via a standard diagnostic tool is no longer possible, as the module locks itself internally after a crash event.
The airbag warning light fails to turn off after starting the vehicle, signaling to the driver that the entire airbag system is disabled and will not provide any protective function in the event of another accident.
Another clear indication is the presence of error code B1157/15 in the fault memory. This code cannot be cleared using conventional workshop diagnostic tools. Any attempt to reset the fault fails because the underlying cause—either the stored crash data or the hardware defect—remains unresolved.

The main cause of error code B1157/15 is stored crash data following an airbag deployment. Another significant cause is an internal hardware defect in the control unit, such as faulty memory cells, short circuits caused by water damage, or defective solder joints on the circuit board. Less frequently, issues with the trigger’s power supply may also contribute.
The most common cause is a previous deployment event. Even if only one seatbelt pretensioner has been activated, irreversible crash data is stored in the control unit. This lock can only be released by specialized hardware and software provided by authorized service centers.
An internal defect in the control unit is the second most frequent cause. Such defects may result from aging electronic components, vibrations, or moisture ingress (water damage). Faulty memory chips (EEPROM) or processors can prevent the module from successfully completing its internal diagnostic routines, thereby triggering error B1157/15.
Disrupted communication between the diagnostic system and the control unit, or an unstable power supply, can also occasionally lead to this error code—even when the hardware itself remains intact.

After installing the repaired control unit, in some cases the vehicle’s fault memory must be finally cleared using a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate the warning light.
