What does error code B1162 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1162 indicates an “implausible signal” within the airbag system (SRS). This means the control unit is receiving data from a sensor or component that is contradictory, illogical, or outside expected parameters. As a result, the system classifies the affected area as unreliable and activates the airbag warning light for safety reasons.
From an electronic standpoint, this fault causes the airbag control unit to switch into a safety mode. It can no longer guarantee the integrity of the entire restraint system because the values reported by a component—such as a seat occupancy sensor—do not match the target values or signals from other sensors. Consequently, the affected airbag circuits are deactivated to prevent false deployment.
This condition persists until the cause of the implausible signal is resolved. Simply clearing the error code without addressing the root cause typically results in the fault being re‑recorded in the fault memory immediately or shortly thereafter.
How do you recognize error code B1162?
The most obvious symptom of error code B1162 is the airbag warning light illuminating continuously or intermittently on the instrument cluster. Often, the fault cannot be permanently cleared using a standard diagnostic tool. In more severe cases, communication with the airbag control unit may be completely interrupted.
The airbag warning light remains active after starting the vehicle and does not extinguish after the usual few seconds. Sometimes the issue occurs only sporadically—for example, at certain temperatures, during vibrations, or when the front passenger seat is occupied—suggesting a loose connection or sensor problem.
Another clear indication is the behavior when reading the fault memory. Code B1162 appears as “permanent” or “intermittent” and reappears immediately after attempting to clear it. This confirms that there is an active, physical, or internal fault in the system that requires repair.
What causes error code B1162?
The causes of B1162 are diverse, ranging from simple connection issues to complex internal defects in the control unit. Common triggers include faulty or loose connectors, broken cables, or defective sensors such as the seat occupancy mat. Internal hardware failures in the control unit itself due to aging or moisture are also frequent culprits.
A major source of problems lies in the peripheral components of the control unit. These include corroded pins on connectors, damaged wiring harnesses—especially under the seats—or malfunctioning sensors that provide incorrect readings. Seat occupancy and weight‑sensing sensors are particularly vulnerable.
The airbag control unit itself can also be the culprit. Internal board-level faults caused by overvoltage, moisture ingress, or the natural aging of electronic components can disrupt signal processing and trigger error code B1162. In rare cases, software or coding errors may also play a role.
In practice, error code B1162 often does not occur alone. Accompanying codes such as B1140 (side airbag sensor), 65535, or 93F9 (both indicating an internal control unit defect), or B1000 (communication loss) can help refine the diagnosis and often point to a more serious issue within the control unit itself.

Error code B1162 is not limited to a single brand and occurs across various manufacturers. It is particularly common in certain Lexus models but is also well‑known in numerous European vehicles from Volkswagen, Mercedes‑Benz, BMW, and Audi. The exact cause can vary depending on the model.
