What does error code B1168 mean?

Error code B1168 indicates an internal, often permanent fault in the airbag control unit. Frequently, a so‑called “fault bit” is set in the electronics, signaling a serious malfunction such as overvoltage, stored crash data, or a hardware failure related to the steering angle sensor. As a result, the control unit enters a locked state.

Technically speaking, this error suggests that the control unit’s internal self‑diagnosis has detected an irreversible anomaly. Even after addressing the external cause—such as recalibrating the steering angle sensor—the error often cannot be cleared, as the fault status remains permanently stored in the device’s memory.

What are the most common causes of B1168?

The primary cause of error code B1168 is an internal hardware defect in the airbag control unit, often triggered by overvoltage or stored crash data—even without an actual airbag deployment. Other triggers can include issues with the steering angle sensor, such as excessive winding of the coil spring. This code frequently occurs alongside other control unit errors like B1000, B1080, B1120, B1200, or B1318.

Stored crash data is one of the most common causes. Even a minor accident where the airbags do not deploy can be enough to put the control unit into a locked state and trigger error B1168.
