What does error code B1177 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1177 indicates a critical internal memory error in the airbag control unit (SRS module). This suggests data corruption or a defect in the memory chip. As a result, the entire airbag system is disabled, and the airbags cannot deploy in the event of a crash.
Technically speaking, error code B1177 means that the operating data or firmware stored in the control unit is damaged. The control unit performs a self-test at every startup; if it detects inconsistent or faulty data in its internal memory—typically EEPROM or flash memory—it sets error B1177 and shuts down the system for safety reasons.
This error cannot be resolved simply by clearing it with a diagnostic tool, as the underlying issue lies within the control unit’s memory itself. Data integrity can no longer be guaranteed, making electronic repair at the component level unavoidable.
What symptoms indicate error B1177?
The primary sign of error code B1177 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Often, the control unit can no longer be accessed or read by standard diagnostic equipment. The vehicle will fail the mandatory technical inspection (TÜV) with this active fault.
The most obvious symptom is the continuously lit airbag warning light, which does not extinguish after starting the engine—indicating a serious, persistent fault in the safety system.
In many cases, communication with the airbag control unit is disrupted. Workshops may be able to read error code B1177 using diagnostic tools such as Autel, Launch, or Bosch KTS, but they often cannot perform further actions like clearing the fault memory because the module remains locked.
An additional, less visible symptom is the complete deactivation of the airbag system. In the event of a crash, neither the airbags nor the seatbelt pretensioners will deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
What are the most common causes of error code B1177?
The main cause of error B1177 is a hardware defect in the internal memory chip or data corruption due to external factors such as voltage fluctuations. Stored crash data following an accident can also lock the control unit and trigger this error. Improper repair attempts often exacerbate the problem.
A damaged or defective memory chip is the root cause. This may result from aging of electronic components or manufacturing defects.
Voltage fluctuations or sudden power dips are another frequent cause. Such events often occur when replacing a weak battery, during jump-starts, or while towing, potentially damaging the sensitive data stored in the control unit’s memory.
After an airbag deployment, so‑called crash data is saved in the control unit. These records deliberately lock the module to enforce a verification process. This locked state frequently manifests as internal memory error B1177.
Occasionally, error B1177 may appear alongside other codes indicating issues with peripheral components. According to fault logs, these often include B1182 (seatbelt pretensioner), B1178 (general system error), or B1179 (sensor circuit error).

Error code B1177 is particularly prevalent in vehicles from Infiniti, Nissan, Renault, Dacia, and Mitsubishi.
