What does error code B117F mean?
Error code B117F indicates a specific electromechanical fault in the airbag control unit. It points to a short circuit to ground or a general malfunction in the solenoid of the passenger-side active headrest. This is a clear hardware failure on the control unit’s circuit board.
The active headrest is a safety system that, in the event of a rear-end collision, rapidly moves forward and upward to intercept the head early and reduce the risk of whiplash injury. Actuation is achieved via a solenoid controlled by the airbag control unit.
If error B117F occurs, the control electronics for this solenoid have detected a fault. The control unit can no longer properly activate or monitor the solenoid, stores the error code, and, as a safety measure, illuminates the airbag warning light.
How do you recognize error B117F?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B117F is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. In some cases, communication issues may also arise, where the control unit cannot be read—or can only be sporadically accessed—by a diagnostic tool.
The airbag warning light fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle, indicating a persistent, safety‑relevant fault in the system. A vehicle with an active airbag fault would not pass the main inspection.
Another technical symptom is impaired communication with the airbag control unit. During diagnostics, workshops often find that access to the fault memory or live data is blocked, complicating troubleshooting.
What causes error code B117F?
The main cause of error code B117F is a hardware defect directly on the airbag control unit’s circuit board. Most commonly, it involves a short circuit in the drive electronics for the solenoid, often triggered by defective components or damaged solder joints within the control unit itself.
Physical damage such as cold solder joints resulting from years of thermal stress and vibration, or faulty memory chips, can also lead to this fault pattern. Additionally, the wiring leading to the active headrest should be inspected for damage.
Furthermore, issues in the passenger seat area can produce similar symptoms. Faults in the seat occupancy detection system—such as defective sensor mats or connector cables—should therefore be checked concurrently, as they may affect the airbag system.
