Error code B1197 indicates a specific issue related to the passenger airbag sensor, with its fault data permanently stored in the airbag control unit. In most cases, this involves crash data that has been locked following an accident—data that cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic tools and requires specialized electronic repair.
Technically speaking, this code means the control unit has registered and stored a critical fault condition. The system classifies this fault as non‑erasable to ensure mandatory inspection of the safety components.
This condition primarily occurs in older Mazda models and prevents normal operation of the airbag system, which is signaled by the warning light remaining continuously illuminated. The repair aims to reset the control unit’s memory to factory settings.

What causes error B1197?

Additional triggers include severe impacts such as a forceful door slam, internal defects caused by water damage, or electrical disturbances in the vehicle’s onboard network.
Following an accident where sensors detect a hazard and deploy the airbags, the control unit becomes electronically locked. This lock ensures safety by preventing further operation without professional hardware inspection and repair.
Even events that do not result in airbag deployment can trigger the fault. For example, a door slammed too forcefully might be misinterpreted by the system as a side impact. Similarly, moisture inside the control unit or voltage spikes—such as those occurring after replacing the alternator—can lead to corrupted data and permanent storage of the code.
