What does error code B1255 mean?
Error code B1255 indicates a fault in the circuit of the external air temperature sensor connected to the airbag control unit. The control unit registers this error when the cable connection is broken, there is a short circuit, or the sensor itself no longer provides plausible data.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the electrical values of all connected sensors. If the signal from the air temperature sensor deviates from the expected target values or is completely missing, the DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B1255 is stored in the fault memory, and the airbag warning light illuminates.
The function of this sensor is critical for the safety system, as ambient temperatures can affect the activation characteristics of pyrotechnic charges. A faulty signal may therefore prompt the control unit, as a safety precaution, to deactivate the entire system or parts of it to prevent an erroneous deployment.
How do you recognize error code B1255?
The most obvious symptom of error B1255 is the permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This indicates a critical fault in the restraint system that requires immediate inspection.
The airbag warning light does not turn off after starting the engine, signaling that the system’s self-diagnosis has detected an issue. In this state, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may be inoperative.
During a workshop diagnosis, error code B1255 can be read out from the airbag control unit’s fault memory using an appropriate diagnostic tool. In some cases, communication with the control unit may even be completely blocked.
What causes B1255?
The main causes of error code B1255 are predominantly electrical in nature. These include broken cables, corroded connectors, or a defect in the air temperature sensor itself. Less frequently, an internal fault within the airbag control unit may also be responsible.
Electrical issues are the most common source of failure. Cable breaks caused by mechanical stress, worn insulation leading to short circuits, or moisture and oxidation at the connectors can disrupt signal transmission from the sensor to the control unit.
A defect in the sensor itself is another possible cause. The external air temperature sensor may fail due to aging or external influences, resulting in no readings or incorrect values being sent to the control unit.
In some cases, the fault lies directly within the airbag control unit. Internal board defects, memory errors, or problems in signal processing can lead to the erroneous setting of code B1255.

Error code B1255 has been documented specifically for certain vehicle models that use airbag control units equipped with air temperature sensor monitoring. At Airbag24, this error is repaired, among others, on vehicles from Dacia and Toyota.
