What does error code B1256 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1256 is an OBD-II diagnostic code that indicates a specific electrical fault within the airbag system. It signifies a short circuit to the battery’s positive terminal in the external air temperature sensor circuit. The airbag control unit (SRS module) detects this abnormal voltage and enters a fault mode, activating the airbag warning light.
Technically, the control unit measures a constant vehicle supply voltage (approximately 12V) on the sensor’s signal line, instead of the expected variable signal that depends on the outside temperature. Although the sensor is primarily used for the climate control system, its data is also relevant to the airbag control unit in many vehicle architectures; therefore, a fault in this circuit can affect the entire safety system.
This error is clearly classified as a hardware or electrical issue. The cause lies either in the peripheral wiring (cable harness, connectors) or in an internal component failure on the airbag control unit’s circuit board itself.
What symptoms are associated with error code B1256?
The primary and unmistakable symptom is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS indicator) in the instrument cluster. Additionally, communication with the airbag control unit via a standard diagnostic tool may become impossible, as the internal fault locks the module. Even after clearing the error code, it stubbornly remains stored in the fault memory.
The activated airbag warning light is not merely an indicator—it is a clear signal that the entire restraint system might fail to deploy correctly or at all during an emergency. This poses a significant safety risk.
Another hallmark is the persistence of the fault. Simply erasing the fault memory with an OBD-II scanner will not resolve the issue. The control unit immediately re-detects and logs the error during the next self-test, as the physical cause—the short circuit—remains unresolved.
Due to the illuminated SRS light, the vehicle will fail the main inspection (HU/AU). Proper functioning of the airbag system is a mandatory requirement for roadworthiness.
What causes error code B1256?
The primary cause of error B1256 is a physical short circuit to the battery in the external air temperature sensor circuit. This can result from damaged cable insulation, corroded connectors, or an internal hardware defect on the airbag control unit’s circuit board itself.
A common source of trouble is the cable harness leading to the sensor. Vibration, aging, or damage caused by rodents can compromise a cable’s insulation, allowing contact with a wire carrying a constant 12V positive supply. Similarly, moisture in connector contacts can lead to corrosion, creating a conductive bridge to the positive terminal.
If the fault does not originate in the external wiring, the root cause lies within the airbag control unit itself. A defective electronic component on the circuit board—such as a resistor, capacitor, or processor input pin—can internally create a short circuit to the module’s power supply.
In workshop diagnostics, error B1256 may occasionally appear alongside other codes, including B1150, B1157, or the general control unit fault B1000, which point to a more extensive problem within the SRS system.
Which vehicles are affected by B1256?
Error code B1256 is not limited to a single manufacturer and occurs across various brands. It is particularly prevalent in models from Porsche, Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz, as well as certain Alfa Romeo and Volkswagen vehicles.

Following the hardware repair, all stored fault codes and any existing crash data are erased from the device’s memory.
