What does error code B1261 mean?
Error code B1261 indicates a specific electrical fault in the airbag system—more precisely, a short circuit between the solar radiation sensor and ground. The airbag control unit detects that the sensor’s signal line has an incorrect, direct connection to the vehicle’s chassis, which compromises the proper functioning of the sensor and potentially the entire system.
Technically speaking, the airbag control module continuously monitors the electrical parameters of its connected components. In this case, the solar radiation sensor—also known as the solar irradiation sensor—is linked to the airbag system and provides measurement data.
A short circuit to ground means that the sensor’s electrical circuit finds an unintended path directly to the battery’s negative terminal instead of following its intended route through the sensor. This results in an implausible or completely absent signal at the control unit’s input, prompting the storage of error code B1261 and activation of the warning system.
How can you recognize error code B1261?
The primary and most obvious symptom of error code B1261 is the illumination of the airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This light remains steadily on after the engine starts, alerting the driver to a malfunction in the safety system that should be inspected immediately.
As soon as the airbag control unit detects the short circuit between the solar radiation sensor and ground, the corresponding warning lamp in the instrument cluster is activated. This is a safety‑related measure designed to highlight a potential failure in the restraint system.
Other symptoms are generally not expected, since the fault affects a very specific component. The focus is clearly on the airbag system’s warning message.
What causes error code B1261?
The main cause of error code B1261 is a physical defect in the solar radiation sensor’s electrical circuit. This includes damaged or moisture‑induced corroded wiring and connectors, a direct short circuit between the sensor lead and the vehicle’s chassis, or an internal defect within the sensor unit itself.
A common cause is damaged cable insulation resulting from aging, mechanical stress, or vibrations. When exposed copper wire comes into contact with a metal part of the vehicle body, it creates the ground short detected by the control unit.
Moisture ingress into connectors or the sensor can also lead to corrosion and leakage currents. Likewise, an internal sensor defect may be another potential source of the short circuit.
