What does error code B1326 mean?

Error code B1326 indicates a critical internal memory fault in the airbag control unit. The cause is usually a hardware defect in the non-volatile memory (EEPROM or flash memory), which stores configuration and crash data. As a result of this error, the entire airbag system is deactivated for safety reasons.

In detail, this means that the microprocessor of the control unit can no longer reliably access the stored, life-critical information. This data includes, among other things, the vehicle configuration, sensor calibration, and especially the records of past accidents (crash data).

Without access to an intact memory, the unit cannot perform its functions and switches to a safety mode. This inevitably causes the airbag warning light to illuminate and the system to be disabled.

How do you recognize error B1326?

The most obvious sign of error B1326 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, it is also no longer possible to establish communication with the airbag control unit using a diagnostic tool, as it is in an internal lockout state and the system is completely inactive.

The airbag indicator light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. It signals a serious, safety-relevant fault that requires immediate inspection.

Another clear symptom is the B1326 code stored in the fault memory. In some cases, the control unit may even fail to respond to diagnostic requests via the OBD-II interface.

What causes B1326?

The primary cause of error code B1326 is a physical defect in the memory chip (EEPROM/Flash) on the control unit’s circuit board. Damaged memory cells due to aging, voltage spikes, or moisture are just as common as short circuits in the memory area. Stored crash data following an accident can also block the memory.

The most frequent trigger is failure of the memory module itself. These electronic components have a limited lifespan and can be damaged by thermal stress or electrical disturbances.

Stored crash data can also cause the error. After an airbag deployment, the control unit locks the memory to prevent tampering. This condition is then interpreted as an internal memory fault.

In rarer cases, software or firmware errors can also prevent proper access to the memory, thereby triggering error code B1326.
