What does error code B1337 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Within this specific diagnostic mapping, error code B1337 signifies an internal, irreparable fault within the airbag control unit itself. The root cause typically lies in crash data stored after a collision, which locks the module, or in tangible defects of the internal electronics. These include faulty components such as capacitors, voltage regulators, or solder joints damaged by corrosion and vibration.
Technically speaking, this error means that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected a critical malfunction on the circuit board or in the data memory (EEPROM/Flash). As a result, the system deems itself unreliable and permanently activates the airbag warning light to alert the driver. Communication with the unit is often severely limited or completely impossible at this point.
This is not a fault affecting external components like sensors or airbags; rather, it is a problem localized directly within the control unit. The device disables its functionality to prevent unintended airbag deployment.
How can you recognize error B1337?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1337 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light (SRS light) in the instrument cluster. It fails to turn off after the vehicle is started. Additionally, diagnostic tools may struggle to establish communication with the airbag control unit, or detect only an erroneous connection, complicating diagnosis.
The persistently lit airbag warning light is the clearest indicator. This signals that the entire airbag system is disabled and will not deploy in the event of a crash. The fault memory usually cannot be cleared using standard diagnostic equipment, as the error is recorded as permanent and static.
In some cases, diagnostic communication completely fails. A diagnostic tool may report “control unit unresponsive” or be unable to read any fault codes. This strongly suggests that the internal processor or power supply within the control unit has failed.
What are the most common causes of error B1337?
The main causes of B1337 are hardware-related. First and foremost are stored crash data, which permanently lock the control unit after an airbag deployment. Equally frequent are internal electronic faults, such as cold solder joints, defective capacitors, voltage regulators, or corrosion damage on the circuit board. External voltage issues in the vehicle can also trigger internal malfunctions.
Stored crash data represent the most common cause when the vehicle has been involved in an accident. Following activation, the control unit writes a “crash lock” into its memory, which can only be removed using specialized tools. Simple clearing of the fault memory is not sufficient here.
Internal electronic faults rank second among the causes and often arise due to age. Vibrations lead to hairline cracks in solder joints (cold solder joints), especially in BGA components. Electrolytic capacitors dry out or leak, causing instability in the power supply. Overvoltage in the vehicle’s electrical system can also destroy internal components such as voltage regulators or microcontroller peripherals.
Problems with the vehicle’s power supply or CAN bus can likewise trigger internal errors in the control unit. Severe voltage fluctuations or ground faults stress the sensitive electronics, potentially resulting in permanent damage and the persistent recording of error B1337.
On which vehicles does error B1337 occur?

Upon receipt, we perform a visual inspection and a bench test to verify the exact fault.
The actual repair involves erasing the crash data from the EEPROM or flash memory, as well as a thorough microscopic examination of the circuit board. Defective SMD components, voltage regulators, or capacitors are replaced with new, high-quality parts. Cold solder joints, especially on larger components or BGAs, are professionally re-soldered (reflow).
After repair, the control unit is tested on a specialized test bench, where communication via the CAN bus, internal power supply, and diagnostic functionality are simulated. Only after a successful test is the unit approved for return shipment. Following reinstallation in the vehicle, the vehicle’s overall fault memory must be cleared once; afterward, the airbag warning light should remain off.
