What does error code B1347 mean?
Error code B1347 indicates an excessively low resistance in the driver airbag circuit ("Driver Airbag Resistance Too Low"). This points to a critical electrical fault, usually a short circuit. The airbag control unit detects the deviation from the target value, permanently stores the fault, and activates the airbag warning light as a safety precaution.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the electrical resistances of all safety‑related components, including the igniters in the airbag modules. A specific target resistance is programmed into the system. If the measured value drops significantly—such as in the case of a short circuit—the control unit interprets this as a severe malfunction and sets error code B1347.
This fault immediately deactivates the affected airbag system to prevent unintended deployment. The error remains stored until the underlying cause is resolved and the fault memory is professionally cleared.
How can you recognize error B1347?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1347 is the constantly illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. In this state, the system is deactivated, meaning that no airbags will deploy in the event of a crash. Additional messages on the display may also appear, depending on the vehicle model.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the vehicle and does not turn off. This is a clear indication that the control unit has detected an active, safety‑critical fault within the system.
When reading the fault memory with a suitable OBD2 diagnostic tool, code B1347 is displayed as the specific cause. Communication with the control unit is generally still possible, provided there is no complete internal failure.
What causes B1347?
The main cause of B1347 is an electrical fault in the driver airbag circuit. Often, it involves damaged cables or connectors that become compromised due to mechanical stress, such as seat adjustments. Short circuits in the wiring or defects in the airbag control unit itself—caused by moisture or component failure—are also common.
One of the most frequent sources of trouble is faulty cables or connectors. Particularly in certain Hyundai and Kia models, repeated seat adjustments can strain the cables beneath the seat, leading to breaks or short circuits.
A short circuit or interruption in the airbag circuit can likewise trigger the fault. This may result from damaged insulation or ingress of moisture, which creates unintended electrical connections.
The airbag control unit itself can also be the culprit. Internal electronic components may fail, solder joints may break, or moisture can cause corrosion on the circuit board, distorting resistance measurements. Following an accident involving airbag deployment, the control unit may also sustain damage.
In which vehicles does error B1347 occur?
Error code B1347 occurs frequently in specific models from Hyundai and Kia. Affected series include the Hyundai Elantra, Getz, and Azera, as well as the Kia Optima and K5. The root cause often lies in particular wiring vulnerabilities inherent to these vehicle generations.
