What does error code B1360 mean?
Error code B1360 indicates a specific electronic fault within the airbag control unit. This defect prevents proper processing of sensor signals and control of the restraint systems. Typically, the code points to an internal hardware malfunction that requires professional electronic repair of the assembly.
Error code B1360 is a specific diagnostic signal indicating an internal fault in the airbag control unit. As the central control unit for all passive safety systems, it can no longer perform its functions reliably.
These functions include evaluating crash sensors, activating seatbelt pretensioners, and precisely triggering the airbags. With a B1360 error, this vital chain is disrupted, signaled by the illumination of the airbag warning light.
Technically, the fault may be caused by damaged solder joints, defective capacitors, or faulty memory chips on the circuit board. In most cases, simply clearing the fault memory is no longer sufficient, as this is a hardware issue.
How do you recognize error B1360?
The primary symptom of error B1360 is a permanently illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light (SRS symbol). Often, the airbag control unit cannot be read using a professional diagnostic tool, or communication fails altogether, complicating troubleshooting.
The most noticeable sign is the activated airbag warning light. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, signaling a critical, safety-relevant system failure.
Another common symptom is the inability to establish communication with the control unit. Workshops find that the unit no longer responds to diagnostic requests via the OBD interface or appears “unreachable.”
Even when communication is possible, stored errors—especially after replacing external components such as the coil spring—cannot be permanently cleared. Corresponding crash data may also remain in the engine control unit, indicating a blockage in the airbag control unit.
What causes error B1360?
The causes of error code B1360 are varied, ranging from mechanical wear to internal hardware defects. Common triggers include poor electrical connections due to seat movement, a defective coil spring in the steering wheel, or internal damage to the control unit caused by moisture and short circuits.
A very common mechanical cause, especially in three-door vehicles, is damaged connectors beneath the seats. The constant folding forward and backward of the seats strains cables and plugs, leading to contact problems. Likewise, the coil spring, which is stressed with every steering movement, is a well-known source of failure.
Internal hardware defects are also a major cause. Water damage can lead to corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board. Sometimes even extreme temperature fluctuations, such as very cold nights, are enough to trigger an internal fault that subsequently cannot be cleared through diagnostics.
External events, like slamming a door too forcefully, can be interpreted by the system as a crash. As a result, crash data is stored in the control unit’s memory, locking the device and requiring specialized reprogramming to restore factory settings.

Error code B1360 occurs specifically in certain vehicle models. This fault is particularly well-known in Lancia and Smart vehicles. Here, repair is often the most cost-effective solution compared to purchasing an expensive new part, restoring full functionality of the airbag system.

The core of the repair is electronic refurbishment. Technicians erase the stored crash data and restore the device’s settings to their factory defaults. Defective hardware components on the circuit board, such as faulty memory chips or damaged solder joints, are identified and professionally replaced.
Before being returned, each repaired control unit undergoes a functional test. We provide a 12-month warranty on every repair. It is essential to permanently clear the fault memory in the vehicle after reinstallation to reset the system.
Important Safety Notes for Repairs
Work on the airbag system must be performed exclusively by trained professionals. Using so‑called airbag simulators or bypass resistors is life‑threatening, results in the loss of vehicle approval, and merely creates a false sense of safety.
Never attempt to repair the airbag system yourself unless you possess the necessary expertise and training. Always entrust the diagnosis, removal, and installation of the control unit to a qualified workshop.
Before removing the control unit, check and, if necessary, repair any external fault sources indicated by the OBD diagnostic system (e.g., a defective seat occupancy sensor). Only in this way can you ensure that the fault truly lies within the control unit itself.
Under no circumstances should airbag simulators, resistors, or other bypass devices be used to deactivate the warning light. These methods tamper with the system, and in the event of an accident, the airbags will fail to deploy. This poses an extreme safety risk and is illegal.
