What does error code B1371 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1371 points to a critical hardware defect in the airbag control unit, specifically a memory access fault. The issue typically lies in the internal EEPROM chip of the control unit, which prevents proper data access. This results in deactivation of the airbag system and poses a significant safety risk.
Technically speaking, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can no longer reliably access or process its stored operational data. This internal EEPROM failure disrupts the safety system’s functional chain, causing the control unit to switch into a safety mode and permanently illuminate the airbag warning light (SRS lamp).
Since this is a hardware defect, simply clearing the fault memory will not resolve the issue. The control unit detects the internal fault during every system check and immediately re-issues the error.
How can you recognize error code B1371?
The most obvious symptom of error code B1371 is the continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. The SRS lamp fails to turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a severe, persistent fault in the safety system. In this state, the vehicle is not roadworthy.
In many cases, the airbag control unit remains readable via the OBD-II interface, but the specific error code B1371 cannot be permanently cleared. It reappears immediately after an attempt to erase it, as the underlying hardware cause persists.
Other functional failures are not directly visible externally but remain critical: the entire airbag system, including seatbelt pretensioners, may become inoperative in the event of a crash. There is no guarantee that the airbags will deploy under real-world conditions.
What causes error code B1371?
The primary cause of error code B1371 is an internal defect in the EEPROM memory chip of the airbag control unit. Additional potential causes include corrosion at connector contacts, damaged cables, or short circuits caused by water ingress, which can secondarily damage the internal electronics.
The most common trigger is wear or damage to the EEPROM memory cells, leading to read errors that the control unit interprets as a “Memory Access Error” and sets error code B1371.
Rarely, external factors such as corrosion on the control unit’s connection pins or damaged wiring within the vehicle’s wiring harness can interfere with data transmission. Penetrating moisture may also cause short circuits on the circuit board, damaging sensitive memory components.
