What does error code B1390 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1390 indicates excessively high resistance in the ignition circuit of the seatbelt pretensioner, typically on the passenger side. The airbag control unit (SRS) detects an open circuit or an abnormal reading in the wiring to the pyrotechnic pretensioner, which prevents its proper operation in an emergency and results in deactivation of the corresponding safety circuit.
Technically speaking, the official definition of diagnostic trouble code (DTC) B1390 is: "The resistance of the ignition circuit connected to component R12/34 (passenger‑side center seatbelt pretensioner igniter) is too high." This means communication between the airbag control unit and the pretensioner igniter is impaired.
The control unit continuously sends a minimal diagnostic current through the ignition circuit to verify its functionality. Depending on the manufacturer, the expected resistance usually falls within a very narrow range of approximately 1 to 3 ohms. If the measured value deviates significantly upward or if the circuit is completely broken (infinite resistance), error code B1390 is stored, and the SRS warning light illuminates.
Although this error code may occasionally be associated with other components—such as the oil temperature sensor—in some Opel, Renault, or Citroën vehicles, within the context of the airbag system it unequivocally points to an issue in the seatbelt pretensioner circuit.
How can you recognize error code B1390?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1390 is the permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the affected seatbelt pretensioner is completely disabled, significantly reducing occupant safety in the event of a crash. Typically, this error cannot be cleared without addressing its root cause.
The airbag warning light remains steadily lit after starting the vehicle or flashes in certain models. This is a clear indication that the vehicle’s self‑diagnostic system has detected a critical fault in the restraint system.
The most significant safety‑related consequence is that the affected seatbelt pretensioner will not activate during a collision. To prevent unintended deployment, the system disables the faulty circuit.
An additional clear sign is that, even after clearing the error code with a diagnostic tool, it reappears immediately or shortly after driving. This confirms that there is a persistent physical fault in the system, rather than just a sporadic contact issue.
The most common causes of error code B1390
The main cause of error code B1390 is almost always a physical break or increased resistance in the electrical circuit connecting the control unit and the seatbelt pretensioner. This can result from damaged cables, corroded connectors, or an internal defect in the pretensioner’s igniter itself. A malfunctioning airbag control unit is less common but still possible.
A break or high contact resistance in the lead wire to the seatbelt pretensioner is the most frequent culprit. Cables exposed to mechanical stress—such as those near the seat adjustment mechanism or cable conduits—are particularly vulnerable.
Corrosion or loose connections at the plug contacts are also typical sources of failure. The often yellow connectors beneath the seat or directly on the pretensioner can develop contact problems due to moisture or vibration.
The seatbelt pretensioner itself may have a defect. Its internal igniter can age or become damaged, causing its electrical resistance to exceed the specified threshold.
In rarer cases, the root cause may lie in an internal fault within the airbag control unit. A defective component on the circuit board responsible for resistance measurement could trigger the error code, even when the external wiring remains intact.
In which vehicles does error code B1390 occur frequently?
Error code B1390 appears across multiple brands but is especially well‑known in certain models from Citroën, Opel, Renault, Mercedes‑Benz, and Fiat. The underlying issue involves the wiring and components of the seatbelt pretensioner system, which share similar architectures across many vehicle platforms.
