What does error code B1391 mean?

Error code B1391 is a Class B (Body) fault, indicating a critical defect in the airbag control unit or its associated sensors. It signals an issue with internal electronic communication or the fundamental functionality of the control unit itself, resulting in the deactivation of the entire airbag system.

Technically, this code falls under the category of control unit and sensor faults. When the system detects an inconsistency that could compromise safety—such as an internal short circuit, a faulty sensor, or corrupted data—it stores error code B1391 in the fault memory. This condition can only be read and analyzed using specialized diagnostic software.

The control unit disables the entire system to prevent unintended airbag deployment. For this reason, the airbag warning light remains steadily illuminated to alert the driver.

What symptoms indicate B1391?

The most obvious symptom is a continuously lit or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the dashboard. Often, the airbag control unit becomes unresponsive when queried by a diagnostic tool, and the fault memory may display entries such as “Crash Data Stored.”

The active airbag warning light is the primary indicator. It does not extinguish after starting the vehicle, signaling that the restraint system is disabled—a significant safety risk.

Especially in older vehicles like the Dodge Durango, water can infiltrate the airbag control unit. Moisture leads to corrosion on the circuit board, causing short circuits that destroy sensitive electronics.
