What does error code B1408 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1408 indicates a specific, internal fault within the airbag control unit itself. This error is particularly well-known in models such as the Peugeot 208 GTI (I and II) and results in the complete deactivation of the airbag system. For safety reasons, communication with the control unit is blocked, and all restraint systems are disabled.
Technically speaking, B1408 suggests that the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected a hardware issue or a serious data error. This can be triggered by defective electronic components on the circuit board, damaged memory areas, or stuck crash data following an accident. The unit then enters a locked state to prevent malfunctions such as unintended deployment.
The consequence is a significant safety risk, as neither airbags nor seatbelt pretensioners will function in the event of a collision. Continuing to drive under these circumstances is not recommended, and professional diagnosis and repair are urgently required to restore the vehicle’s protective functions.
How do you recognize error B1408?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1408 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the fault memory cannot be cleared, and the control unit becomes unresponsive via the OBD2 diagnostic interface, making system diagnostics more challenging. The airbag system is completely inoperative.
The airbag warning light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. This signals an active, safety‑critical fault that requires immediate inspection. The system has deactivated itself and remains in this state until the root cause is resolved.
Another clear indication is the loss of communication with the control unit. If a workshop attempts to read the fault memory using professional diagnostic equipment, the connection to the airbag module fails—the unit no longer responds to requests.
What causes error code B1408?
The most common cause of error code B1408 is an internal hardware defect in the control unit or stored crash data from an accident that prevents further use. External factors such as damaged cables, short circuits, or loose connectors—well‑known weak points in Peugeot 208 GTI models—can also trigger this error.
Following an accident, the control unit stores so‑called crash data that blocks reactivation. This lock can only be reset by specialized workshops equipped with appropriate software. This is one of the most frequent repairs associated with B1408.
