What does error code B1418 mean?
Error code B1418 indicates a specific communication fault between the airbag control unit (ASS) and the left front impact sensor. The control unit cannot receive valid data from the sensor, suggesting an interruption or malfunction in the signal line, a defective sensor, or an internal processing error. As a result, for safety reasons, the airbag system is deactivated, and the warning light in the cockpit illuminates.
The airbag control unit serves as the central control module of the passive safety system. It collects and processes data from various crash sensors—such as acceleration and pressure sensors—to precisely activate life-saving restraint systems like airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a collision.
When error B1418 occurs, the control unit detects that communication with the left front sensor has been disrupted. This sensor is crucial for detecting frontal impacts. Since the system’s integrity can no longer be assured, the module stores the error code and switches to a safe state that prevents airbag deployment.
How do you recognize error B1418?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1418 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle, signaling a serious malfunction in the restraint system to the driver. Reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool confirms the specific B1418 code stored in the airbag control unit.
The glowing airbag warning lamp is a clear indication that the system is not operational. Consequently, occupant protection features—especially the front airbags—may fail to deploy during a crash.
In addition to the visual warning in the cockpit, the airbag control unit may become unresponsive or only partially responsive during diagnostic attempts if the communication fault also affects the diagnostic line. A vehicle with an active airbag fault will fail the main inspection.
What causes B1418?
The most common cause of error code B1418 lies in the peripheral components of the control unit. These include physical issues such as broken cables, corroded connectors, or a defect in the left front impact sensor itself. Contamination at the connector can also disrupt signal transmission. An internal fault within the airbag control unit is a rarer but possible cause.
A detailed inspection of the wiring between the control unit and the left front sensor is the first step. Often, mechanical damage or age-related corrosion at the connectors interrupts contact and triggers the communication error.
The front impact sensor itself may fail due to moisture, vibrations, or an internal electronic malfunction. In such cases, it sends no signals or erroneous signals, which the control unit interprets as a communication breakdown.
In some instances, crash data stored in the control unit—for example, following a minor parking bump—can block normal operation and cause communication errors even when the hardware remains intact. Resetting this data then becomes a critical part of the repair process.
Which vehicles experience error B1418?
Error code B1418 frequently occurs in certain Nissan and Infiniti models from the late 1980s through the early 2000s. Affected are primarily sporty coupes such as the Nissan 240SX and 180SX, as well as the Infiniti I35 sedan. Airbag24 offers specialized repairs for these control units.
