What does error code B1434 mean?

Error code B1434 indicates a critical fault, typically a short circuit or failure in the primary crash sensor area. This error is stored in the airbag control unit (SRS) and causes the airbag warning light to illuminate. This signals that the safety system has been deactivated, significantly compromising vehicle safety.

Technically, the control unit detects an invalid or missing signal from the front impact sensor. This sensor is crucial for deploying the front airbags during a collision.

The error points to a serious hardware issue—whether in the wiring, the sensor itself, or, more rarely, the control unit. The system switches to a safety mode to prevent false activations, but this also disables the protective function.

How can you recognize error B1434?

The main symptom of error B1434 is a permanently or intermittently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. In most cases, the error code cannot be permanently cleared with a diagnostic tool because the underlying hardware defect continues to be detected by the system. In this state, the airbag system is effectively out of service.

An electronic fault on the airbag control unit’s circuit board can also trigger this code.

The primary crash sensor itself can also fail. As an electronic component, it is subject to wear and tear and may suffer damage from environmental factors such as moisture or temperature fluctuations.

B1434 is often accompanied by additional codes, including B1150 (no communication with the airbag control unit), B1404 (internal control unit fault), or B1405 (instrument cluster-related error). Codes like B1042, B1050, B1034, or C1603 may also appear alongside the main fault.

Error code B1434 occurs frequently in specific Mitsubishi models. Particularly affected are the Mitsubishi Pajero V80 from model years 2007–2012 and its facelifted version from 2012–2021. The Mitsubishi Strada K74 is also well known for this issue, as its installed crash sensors and associated wiring are prone to defects.
