What does error code B1444 mean?
Error code B1444 indicates a critical short circuit in the airbag ignition circuit, specifically in the “Squib Ignition Drive Circuit.” This means there is a faulty electrical connection within the ignition circuit that prevents the airbag from deploying safely and correctly in an emergency, compromising the entire safety system.
Technically speaking, the “Squib Ignition Drive Circuit” refers to the specific electrical circuit that delivers the electrical pulse to the gas generator inside the airbag module. A short circuit in this circuit means that current takes an unintended path—either to the vehicle’s ground or to another wire—interrupting the intended signal pathway to the squib (igniter).
Due to this fault, the electrical energy required for ignition can no longer reach the igniter. The Airbag Control Unit (ACU) detects this safety-critical condition, stores the permanent error code B1444, and immediately activates the airbag warning light to inform the driver of the system failure.
The cause is almost always hardware-related, stemming either from external wiring in the vehicle or directly from the control unit itself, where internal electronic components on the circuit board may be damaged.
How do you recognize error B1444?
The main symptom of error code B1444 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating an active, safety-relevant fault in the restraint system. Other symptoms are usually not directly noticeable, as the system remains deactivated in the background.
The airbag warning light is the primary and unmistakable warning signal. Once the control unit detects the short circuit in the ignition circuit, the light is activated to clearly alert the driver to a serious malfunction. In this state, the entire airbag system is non-functional.
In some cases, reading the fault memory with a universal diagnostic tool may fail. Although the fault is stored in the control unit, external communication via the OBD2 interface can be disrupted if the internal short circuit also affects other system-relevant components.
What causes B1444?
The primary cause of error code B1444 is an electrical short circuit, triggered either by damaged cables and connectors in the vehicle or by an internal defect within the airbag control unit itself. Connections to airbag modules—such as the coil spring in the steering wheel or connectors under the seats—are often affected.
A common external cause involves physical damage to the wiring, including frayed cable insulation, corroded contacts in connectors, or mechanically damaged plugs. The coil spring (also known as the slip ring) in the steering wheel is particularly prone to cable breaks or short circuits due to constant rotational movement.
The short circuit may also occur directly on the circuit board of the airbag control unit. Electronic components like driver ICs or resistors responsible for controlling the ignition circuit can fail due to aging, thermal overload, or moisture, leading to an internal short circuit.
Although B1444 is primarily a short-circuit fault, it can also appear in conjunction with stored crash data. After an accident or airbag deployment, the control unit may become internally locked, causing electronic damage that subsequently manifests as a short-circuit fault in the ignition circuit.
Which vehicles are affected by B1444?
Error code B1444 occurs specifically in certain vehicle models equipped with the corresponding control unit hardware. This error code is particularly well-known in association with the Mitsubishi Strada K74 series. Repairs are often possible for other models with similar system architectures as well.
