What does error code B1449 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1449 indicates a specific electronic fault: a short circuit to ground in the wiper‑park sensor circuit. Although the root cause lies in the wiper system, the airbag control unit (SRS) detects and stores this fault, resulting in the deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, it is an OBD2 diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that points to an issue in a peripheral system. The central airbag control unit monitors the integrity of various connected systems. If it detects a critical fault such as a short circuit, it automatically switches to a passive mode for safety reasons.
In practice, this means the airbag warning light remains illuminated, and the occupant protection systems will not function until the fault is resolved and the control unit is reset.
How can you recognize error B1449?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1449 is the permanently lit airbag warning light (SRS lamp) on the instrument cluster. This directly alerts the driver that the occupant protection system is disabled and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
The warning light does not turn off even after restarting the vehicle. It stays active as long as the fault code remains stored in the airbag control unit’s memory.
When reading the fault memory with a suitable OBD2 diagnostic tool, code B1449 is clearly displayed, indicating a short circuit in the wiper‑park sensor circuit.
What causes error code B1449?
The main cause of error code B1449 is a physical defect in the electrical system of the wiper‑park sensor. Most often, it results from a short circuit to ground caused by damaged wiring, moisture ingress, or corroded connectors.
A common trigger is deteriorated cable insulation in the engine compartment, which develops due to aging, heat, or mechanical damage (e.g., rodent bites). This can allow a live wire to come into direct contact with the vehicle’s chassis (bodywork).
Another contributing factor is the airbag control unit itself. Even after addressing the primary cause—the short circuit—the fault code often persists in the unit’s memory. Without a targeted clearing or reset of the stored data, the airbag warning light cannot be deactivated.

Error code B1449 occurs specifically in certain models manufactured by Hyundai. In particular, the Hyundai Sonata sedan has been known to experience this issue across two consecutive generations, suggesting a shared design feature in the vehicle’s electronics.
