What does error code B1454 mean?
Error code B1454 indicates a specific malfunction in the circuit of the dynamic cornering light position sensor on the vehicle’s left side. Although this fault primarily affects the lighting system, it is often diagnosed within the broader context of the vehicle’s entire electronic system—including the airbag control unit—highlighting the complex interconnectedness of modern control units.
The airbag control unit is a central safety component. It collects and processes signals from various sensors throughout the vehicle to ensure that restraint systems such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners are deployed correctly in the event of a collision.
In addition to its deployment function, the control unit is also responsible for system monitoring. It stores detected faults, illuminates the airbag warning light when malfunctions occur, and communicates with other control units in the vehicle network—for example, to detect seat occupancy.
How do you recognize error B1454?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of an airbag system fault, including code B1454, is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This indicates an active, safety‑related fault that requires immediate inspection and often cannot be easily cleared.
The airbag warning light fails to turn off after starting the vehicle or suddenly illuminates during driving. This is a clear sign that the control unit has detected a defect in the system or one of its components and logged it in the fault memory.
In some cases, following an accident or due to a severe internal failure, the control unit may no longer respond to diagnostic requests. Attempts to read the fault memory fail, indicating a more profound issue.
What causes error B1454 and similar malfunctions?
The causes of airbag system errors are diverse, ranging from mechanical wear to electronic defects. Common culprits include damaged connectors, cable breaks caused by seat movement, defective coil springs in the steering wheel, or moisture ingress leading to short circuits in the control unit.
A very common source of trouble, especially in three-door vehicles, involves the connectors beneath the front seats. Frequent folding back and forth of the seats can damage the cables and plugs for the side airbags or seatbelt pretensioners.
Another classic defect concerns the coil spring—also known as the slip ring—located behind the steering wheel. Since it undergoes mechanical stress with every steering movement, cable breakage may occur, interrupting the connection to the driver’s airbag.
Water or moisture inside the vehicle cabin can penetrate the airbag control unit, causing short circuits or corrosion on the circuit board. Defective external sensors can also trigger error codes stored in the control unit.
Specifically for Mitsubishi vehicles, alongside B1454, other error codes may indicate issues within the SRS system. These include B1498 (internal memory error in the SRS module), B1401 (defective ignition capsule on the driver’s side), B1421 (damage to the ignition power supply), B1451 (interruption in the circuit of the left‑side airbag igniter), or B1491 (interruption of the front airbag power supply).
